“I know that they’re going to go out there and they’re going to sell it, but I used to be that little kid or that little guy that was selling stuff in the street,” Giannis Antetokounmpo noted in an interview with ESPN on his early struggling days, trying to survive. His journey from a challenging upbringing to NBA superstardom is a testament to the hooper’s sacrifice. But what goes beyond his athletic prowess lies a rich history of his cultural identity that shapes who he is. So, let’s dive in!
From Lagos to Athens: The story of Giannis’s parents and his early life
Born on 6 December 1994 in Athens, Greece, Giannis always faced challenges with his identity. But why? He was born to Charles and Veronica Antetokounmpo, a Nigerian immigrant couple. In 1991 (3 years before Giannis was born), the couple migrated to Greece for better opportunities, but their immigrant status and no work permit made it difficult for them to find steady jobs. They could not secure Greek citizenship without stable employment, which trapped them in a vicious cycle of uncertainty.

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s family struggled with poverty and the complexities of navigating multiple cultures. They found themselves living in a cramped apartment, with the daily goal of procuring money and food, overshadowing everything else. All this led to the hooper working since childhood. “I was selling stuff probably since I could remember, like 6 or 7 years old. I was always out of home trying as much as I could to help my mom and dad by selling watches, glasses, CDs, DVDs, and everything I could find.”
“I was doing that until I turned 17 because I had to. I had no other choice. When I was selling all those things, I was the best seller,” he said. As we also address Antetokounmpo’s ethnicity, he is Nigerian. “My family’s roots run deep in Nigeria. It’s a place that holds a very special place in my heart,” he said in a statement released by CAFF. By this, let’s explore how Giannis embraced his Nigerian heritage during his first visit to his homeland. What does this journey reveal about the significance of roots in shaping one’s identity?
Giannis Antetokounmpo: A heartfelt homecoming to Nigeria—Rediscovering roots, family, cultural heritage, and food
Back in August 2023, The Greek Freak visited his parent’s motherland, Nigeria. It was his lifelong dream, but he visited with a cause. It was his new documentary “Ugo,” produced in partnership with WhatsApp. But what is Ugo? In the Igbo origin, “Ugo,” means “God’s eagle”. The Igbo people are one of the largest ethnic groups in Nigeria, primarily residing in the southeastern part of the country. “Ugo” symbolizes strength, resilience, and divine protection, aligning well with Giannis Antetokounmpo’s journey and achievements.
In the 31-minute documentary, he immerses himself in Nigerian culture, reconnecting with family, and experiencing the vibrant community he often speaks about. “A lot of people know that I represent the Greek national team and call me ‘The Greek Freak,’ but they’ve never seen this side of me,” he expressed. His Nigerian upbringing, filled with rich cultural experiences, is a fundamental part of his identity.

Giannis Antetokounmpo has a vision for his ancestral homeland. The Charles Antetokounmpo Family Foundation (CAFF) was founded in 2017, in memory of his father who died because of a heart attack in the same year. Through this organization, he hopes to help immigrants and refugees, particularly in Milwaukee, Greece, and Nigeria.
Through CAFF, they partnered with the GEANCO Foundation in April 2024 to create a community center in Nigeria. GEANCO is known for its focus on health and education. However, this center will serve education, sports, and enrichment for residents. It also highlights the staggering number of out-of-school children, especially girls. “When I learned that upwards of 20 million children are out of school in Nigeria, 60% of whom are girls, I knew I wanted to do something,” he said.
With the community center, children gain access to computers and sports equipment. “There was nothing there,” says GEANCO’s CEO, Afam Onyema. This center represents hope and opportunity. Can we empower these young minds to thrive?
