Dereck Lively II was born on February 12, 2004, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, making him an American citizen. He was raised in a culturally diverse environment, with his father, Dereck Lively Sr., of African-American descent, and his mother, Kathy Drysdale, who’s white. His family background was equally unique—his father worked as a chef, while his mother had a distinguished career as a marketing manager for different sports teams at Penn State University.

In addition to her role at Penn State, Kathy was also a former collegiate basketball player and a key figure in the Philadelphia 76ers organization. Dereck grew up in an environment surrounded by sports, with his mother playing a huge role in his development as an athlete.

Although Dereck’s upbringing was influenced by a mix of cultural and occupational diversity, his childhood was far from easy. His father battled cocaine and heroin addiction, which made their home life challenging. Despite these struggles, Lively fondly remembers his father’s playful nature and the fun moments they shared. Tragically, his father passed away in 2012  due to overdose when Lively was seven years old.

Following his father’s death, he grew even closer to his mother, who became his support, guiding him through the most difficult times.

However, life presented even more hardship when, in 2014, Lively’s mother was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. This marked a painful period for both of them, and as a child, Dereck often saw his mother’s physical and emotional struggles. Tragically, in 2024, just before the playoffs, Lively faced the devastating loss of his mother after a long battle with cancer.

Despite the heartbreaking time, he stayed focused on his game and his teammates and shared, “Alright, I’ve got to continue it. She passed the torch on to me, and I’ve got to carry it now”.

Dereck Lively II’s path to the NBA didn’t just happen overnight, he rose through the ranks, starting with his high school. He attended Westtown School in Pennsylvania. He led the team to a 31–7 record, securing the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association state championship in 2022. In the same year, he earned the McDonald’s All-American Boys Game honors, becoming one of the top high school players in the country.

Regarded as one of the top prospects in the 2022 recruiting class, Lively earned five-star status from major recruiting outlets. He got offers from Kentucky, Michigan, Penn State, and committed to play college basketball for the Blue Devils at Duke. As a freshman, he made an immediate impact getting included in both the Naismith and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award preseason watchlists, earning spots on both the ACC All-Freshman and Defensive teams. His stellar performances led to his draft, and the hoopster opted to forgo the rest of his college eligibility.

On April 4, 2023, Lively declared for the NBA draft and was selected 12th overall by the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, he was subsequently traded to the Dallas Mavericks, and made his NBA debut on October 25, 2023, in a thrilling 126–119 victory over the San Antonio Spurs. His standout performance earned him a spot on the NBA All-Rookie Second Team. His rookie season culminated in a trip to the 2024 NBA Finals, and since then, he has quickly become a key player for the team.
