A multi-sport athlete in his formative years, Oklahoma City Thunder’s Aaron Wiggins was the 55th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Regarded as one of the most accurate shooters in the league, Wiggins shoots field goals at a near 50% clip. His shot chart reflects this, as Wiggins can shoot successfully from most parts of the court. Wiggins’ attributes make him invaluable as a bench player.
Wiggins was scouted and rated as a 4-star prospect as he graduated from the Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, North Carolina. He joined the University of Maryland thereafter in 2018, soon playing for the Maryland Terrapins. And just three years later, he was drafted by OKC in the aforementioned 2021 draft. But what kind of deal was he offered by Oklahoma? Let us find out.

On August 15, 2021, Aaron Wiggins signed a two-way contract worth $462,629 with the Oklahoma City Thunder. If you are unaware of what a contract entails, it’s simple. Per the terms of a two-way contract, a player is eligible to play for a franchise’s main team as well as its minor league affiliate. This meant Wiggins’ playing time was split between the Thunder in the NBA and the Oklahoma City Blue in his first season.
Soon after, in February 2022, the Thunder ended up converting his deal into a regular 3-year NBA contract with a team option clause in the fourth. The value of this deal was around $6.3 million, with an average annual payout of about $1.5 million. And right when he became a free agent, Wiggins signed a five-year, $47 million contract to stay at the Thunder. This new contract also has a team option clause in the fifth year.
Under this new deal, Wiggins has a reported salary of $10,514,017 for the 2024/25 NBA season. Quite the bump in pay, don’t you think?

When will Aaron Wiggins become an unrestricted free agent?

Aaron is set to stay in Oklahoma for years to come, for the next four years, at least. The last year, however, is up to the Thunder and whether they choose to exercise the team option clause in his contract. However, with the way Wiggins has played lately, you can’t really see Oklahoma letting him go so easily. So, Wiggins will become an unrestricted free agent again in the 2028/29 NBA season.
Able to play most roles in a team, Wiggins is a very versatile presence in the Thunder’s locker room. So it is not hard to see why they value him so much. And with the inflation of the salaries in the NBA, Oklahoma fans will see the new Wiggins deal as an absolute steal!
