Is Victor Wembanyama's injury a sign of trouble for the Spurs' season hopes?

Well, everyone is expecting Victor Wembanyama to have a monster season. Especially now that he has a veteran leader like Chris Paul guiding him. Although Wemby has had a decent start so far, he is still having a hard time adding wins to the Spurs’ column. As his team sought their second win tonight while facing OKC, fans witnessed a scary sight, as the French sensation left the floor mid-game after an unfortunate incident.

Early in the second quarter, Victor Wembanyama was being defended by guard Ajay Mitchell inside the paint. Noticing the massive height mismatch, the big man decided to post up, hoping to get an easy bucket. Unfortunately, the two players got tangled up while fighting for the spot and as they fell to the floor, it looked like the Frenchman’s foot was tweaked by Mitchell’s leg. With Wemby still on the floor after the play, Chet Holmgren got an easy fastbreak jam on the other end.

Sure enough, a timeout was called and Wemby, who was seemingly shaken up by the fall, headed straight to the locker room to assess a potential injury. Concerns exponentially grew as he was seen limping while on his way to the tunnel.

While Spurs fans feared a major injury, they soon breathed a huge sigh of relief when Victor Wembanyama returned to the floor minutes later and checked back into the game in the same quarter. However, the damage had already been done by OKC in his absence. When the Center left the game, OKC led by just 9 points. But they increased that advantage to 16 while he was out!

“I’m learning and I’m worried for the opponents in a couple years.” Leading his nation to a silver medal in the Olympics, Wemby turned a lot of heads this summer. However, he hasn’t started the season the way fans expected. In his first 4 appearances, the 20-year-old has struggled to find his shooting stroke. In the opener against Dallas, he scored only 17 points and made a shocking confession, “A little hard conditioning-wise at first, of course [as] I expected. But I think we had some good basketball moments and some really bad ones.”

Have an interesting take?

Of course, it requires some time to get used to the NBA schedule after the long summer break. But Victor Wembanyama has had only one double-digit rebound game so far and has been struggling on both ends, despite partnering with veteran Chris Paul.

Even tonight, although the youngster returned from the injury scare unscathed, he played his worst game so far as he finished with only 6 points and 8 rebounds. Sure enough, the Spurs got blown out by the Thunder (93-105).

Chet Holmgren stole the show with 19 points while going 7-of-10 shooting, alongside two blocks and steals each, and 5 rebounds. Currently, in a brewing big-man NBA rivalry between Chet and Wemby, the OKC star has a big 5-1 advantage to his name too!

Fans are hoping for Victor Wembanyama to turn things around soon and play like the hooper everyone expects him to be, after a superhit ROTY season followed by the Paris Olympics.
