The Spurs trading for De’Aaron Fox was a statement of intent from the franchise. With Victor Wembanyama and Chris Paul present, the inclusion of Fox made San Antonio dream of a playoff push. But hold your horses Texas, the dream just might remain a dream after the latest update on Victor Wembanyama.

According to Shams Charania, “Victor Wembanyama is expected to miss reminder of the season with a deep vein thrombosis in right shoulder.” He further clarified, the 7-foot-3 French center has a form of blood clot in his right shoulder and the issue is believed to be an isolated condition.

The franchise opened up about the 21-year-old’s condition on Thursday. Quite unsurprisingly, the news came right after his first appearance at the All-Star Weekend. While most players are reluctant to put in too much effort at the star-studded event to avoid injury, Wemby was eager to give his all in the game. As the center mentioned, the only way he plays basketball is by going all in.

In fact, Wemby made that clear after his side, Team Chuck, lost the final All-Star Game against Team Shaq. “My biggest takeaway is that it’s possible to give a 100% on that court, to play hard, to play your a** off,” he told the media. “For me, it’s the only way to play basketball. I think it’ll only make the game better.”

Unfortunately, that didn’t work out in his favor. Now, despite his efforts and hard work, he will have to take a step back and watch his dreams be put on hold for now as this is not his season.

Victor Wembanyama’s DPOY dream on hold due to injury setback

Since his arrival in the league, Victor Wembanyama has impressed with his versatility. Last season, he might not have fetched the bigger fish but he got his hands on the Rookie Of The Year title and was fully prepared to show his best this season.

Is the Spurs' playoff dream shattered with Wembanyama's injury, or can Fox and Paul step up?

Have an interesting take?

Before permanently being added to the team’s injury list this season, he was averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 3.8 blocks. These incredible numbers would have undoubtedly strengthened his candidacy for the Defensive Player of the Year title, especially after he openly challenged Rudy Gobert last season, claiming he would take it from him this season.

Now, that won’t be possible due to the league’s 65-game rule, which requires a player to play a minimum of 65 regular season games to qualify for the individual title race. Wemby has played only 46 games this season, and since he won’t be appearing any more, that opportunity is lost. Wemby will have to wait a bit more to finally be the future of the league as many have claimed. Until then, the prayers of the NBA community are with him.
