Is Marcus Smart's injury-prone nature a ticking time bomb for the Grizzlies' playoff hopes?

“Year 11 Loading” Before the season started, Marcus Smart was excited about his return after missing most of last year because of a finger injury. And many believed this would be the year he finally returned to his DPOY form, as he revealed his much leaner physique on social media. However, just five games into the season, the hooper’s health has raised concerns once again, as he was forced to leave tonight’s Nets game because of an unfortunate and scary incident.

During the closing seconds of the first quarter, the veteran guard was trying to dribble past Ziaire Williams as he crossed half-court. Unfortunately, Marcus Smart stepped on Williams’ foot, causing his right ankle to twist at an eerie angle. Sure enough, he was visibly hurt after the play and limped while struggling to keep the dribble alive. But with the play still running, the hooper walked to the corner and stood in agony, waiting for the game to stop, and he immediately headed to the locker room once the whistle blew.

Well, he did not return for the rest of the half and was scoreless before twisting his ankle. It was later revealed that he was done for the night. Moreover, this could be a massive blow for the Grizzlies who are already dealing with Ja Morant’s lingering injury.

Yes, the high flyer did not play in the last game because of right thigh soreness. And he was listed as questionable ahead of tonight’s game as well. Although Ja eventually suited up for his team, the organization is being very cautious about his health, as they do not want to further aggravate the injury. Unfortunately, these are not the only two Grizzlies stars with health concerns.

Memphis Grizzlies’ early season injury bug is reflecting shades of last year

Surely, last season was one of the worst in the Grizzlies’ franchise history. But to no fault of their own. Dealing with tremendous bad luck, there was a point when 13 of their players were listed on the injury report. Unfortunately, this season is starting to look very similar right from the get-go! Apart from Marcus Smart and Ja Morant, several of their stars are either out or dealing with injuries.

That includes GG Jackson II, who is recovering from a foot injury and is not expected to return this year. And Luke Kennard, who is also dealing with a left foot muscle strain. Meanwhile, Cam Spencer and Vince Williams Jr. are also unavailable.

Even their star rookie Zach Edey has been dealing with right calf soreness. Sure enough, the hooper was questionable before tonight’s game but was able to play after getting the clearance. However, it is not a good sign that the team’s injury report has already begun stacking up so early into the season. And if things continue to go this way, they could face a fate similar to last year.
