Is Ja Morant's fiery spirit a blessing or a curse for the Grizzlies' playoff hopes?

“He hungry, man. He’s ready to get out there.” For Sports Agent Mike Miller, his client Ja Morant was someone who was just looking to get back on the NBA court to prove his worth. The player certainly became defiant towards his rivals from the start of the regular season, delivering memorable performances with back-to-back double-doubles. He continued his streak during the game against the Lakers too, pulling off some ‘taunting’ gestures. Unfortunately, tonight’s opposition seems to have abruptly cut his time on the court short for now.

As the Lakers-Grizzlies matchup had just 3:50 minutes remaining in the third quarter, the home team was leading by 87-72. An increase to the lead seemed to be coming their way, as Scotty Pippen Jr. had possession of the ball. He passed it to Ja Morant, who made a big leap to secure a layup. A defender blocked him in a manner that sent the hoopster crashing to the floor. The other players didn’t seem to take too much of the incident. However, things did not seem to be all right as Ja Morant lifted his finger in the air. The whistle was blown, and he was sent to the locker room.

The team did not reveal the exact specification of Ja Morant’s injury for quite some time. The officials did not call a foul even after the player went down, and the game continued at its normal pace. According to an update by ‘Underdog NBA’, doctors have now diagnosed the Grizzlies star with a hamstring injury.

As a result, they deemed his return to the court as ‘doubtful’. Morant came out of the locker room in the 4th quarter but remained on the bench. Fortunately, his efforts during the initial part of the game were enough to put the Grizzlies on top. They were able to build on it and end the matchup with a 131-114 win.

In his 24 minutes on the court, the 25-year-old point guard scored 20 points, accompanied by 4 rebounds and 5 assists. The 360-degree layups he made twice in the game certainly created waves, as the buzz around the same has now taken over social media. It became extra competitive between him and LeBron James during the game. After the 39-year-old hit him with a ‘too small’ gesture, Ja Morant retaliated.

He dashed past Gabe Vincent to drop a floater and then, collided with LeBron. We’ll leave the whether it was ‘intentional or not’ part to you. Given the fact that they were able to move past the Grizzlies during the 2023 playoffs, some form of rivalry still exists, and Morant was willing to make full use of it.

Taking some questions in the locker room, Ja Morant was quick to be asked about his hamstring injury. The player assured the reporters that things do not seem to be too dire, as he revealed, “I’m alright.” Action News 5 reporter Matt Infield then asked whether the injury was serious enough to keep him away from the Wizards matchup. To this, the 25-year-old replied, “We’ll see.”

Hamstring injuries are nothing new for the Memphis Grizzlies squad. In fact, Jaren Jackson Jr. had suffered from one only recently during the training camp. It had kept the hoopster out of the main lineup for the entirety of the preseason, including the first two regular season games. Therefore, the Memphis franchise’s fans and players should prepare for the possibility that their talisman may not return to the court very soon.
