Joel Embiid just can’t catch a break! First, it was the lingering knee issue that kept him out at the start of the season. Then, just when he was finally looking healthy, the former MVP suffered a sinus fracture, that has forced him to wear a protective mask and miss even more games. And tonight, after returning to the lineup from a one-game hiatus, Embiid was forced to leave the Spurs clash early as he got booted due to his emotional outburst after a scary collision with Victor Wembanyama.

Well, the incident occurred late in the second quarter. As Embiid was driving to the basket for a layup, he collided with Wemby inside the paint. Both stars fell to the floor and the whistle blew, which Joel thought was in his favor. However, the official deemed it an offensive foul on the former MVP. Sure enough, Embiid was livid after the call and charged at the official to complain about it, which led to a quick technical foul for him.

Unfortunately, it riled Embiid up even more and he began yelling at the female official. His furious outburst led to a second technical, causing him to get ejected from the game. A fuming Embiid took off his mask and attempted charging at the ref once again while his teammates and staff tried to hold him back.

Unfortunately for him, the decision was final and his night ended early with only 9 points and three rebounds. Moreover, this was not the only controversial decision of the game. And maybe, that’s why Embiid was frustrated.

The official had made a similar mistake earlier in the game. At around the 8-minute mark in the second quarter, Andre Drummond got penalized with a technical foul after he pushed Wemby to the floor during a tussle. That was not the problematic part. Just seconds later, Drummond received another tech and got booted from the game after Wembanyama seemingly fell to the floor once again because of a push from him. Well, Drummond and the Sixers were not pleased with the decision as the replay showed that Wembanyama might have flopped on the play.

While Drummond headed to the locker room, the officials checked the replay and called a tech on Wemby for flopping. And Tyrese Maxey even converted the resulting free throw. Continuing the bizarre sequence, Drummond was called back from the locker room and his ejection was rescinded, which allowed him to continue playing. It didn’t end there! The officials then nullified the tech on Wemby and took a point off the Sixers’ score, leaving the entire arena confused. That sequence as bizarre as it was, only escalated the tensions in the game, which might have led to Embiid’s emotional outburst minutes later. Whatever the reason, the ejection only adds to the former MVP’s disappointing season as his misery continues.
