Tyler Kolek was born in Providence, Rhode Island, to Lynn and Kevin Kolek, which makes his nationality American. Even though Tyler’s ethnicity is rooted in American soil, his surname hints at an Eastern European ancestry. “Kolek,” points to potential Polish or Czech roots, but it’s more of an educated guess than a confirmed fact. Tyler’s father, Kevin Kolek, had a decorated basketball career and also worked in law enforcement, at Southeastern Massachusetts University, so it’s no surprise that basketball runs in the family. Under his father’s influence, Kolek Jr. became one himself (not an officer. At least, not yet). During his college years, he earned the Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year and Big East Player of the Year honors. He entered the draft in 2024 and earned the titles of MVP and champion in the NBA G League Winter Showcase.

Tyler’s mother, Lynn, dedicated her career to healthcare, which further underscores the strong work ethic and commitment to service that runs through the family.

Which religion does Tyler Kolek follow?

He has opened up about his views and how important faith is to him, and his words reflect in his actions, especially off the court. One notable example of Tyler’s commitment to his faith is his participation in Marquette’s ‘Holiday Happiness’ event. As part of the initiative, he joined three other Marquette basketball players to help young students from Messmer St. Mary’s School do some Christmas shopping. The students, aged 8-10, were part of the SHARP Literacy program, which works to engage students with education and community service.

Kolek and his teammates spent a Saturday afternoon at Bayshore Kohl’s, where they were each given a $150 gift card to help the children buy gifts for their families. For Tyler, this wasn’t just an opportunity to give back—it was a chance to honor God by serving others. As he shared, he felt this event was a way of “honoring God and giving back,” reflecting the Catholic values of generosity and community service that are so important to him.

Kolek was especially moved by the joy on the children’s faces as they shopped for presents, saying, “As a child, I never had an opportunity like that.” This experience not only gave the kids a brighter holiday, but also allowed Tyler to further embrace the core Catholic values of compassion and kindness.
