Who is Oso Ighodharo’s father? Was he a professional basketball player?

Talking about his parents, Dawn and Osaro Ighodaro are accomplished educators who always put education first. Their story is unique. His father, Osaro, originally from Nigeria, came to the U.S. because of a basketball scholarship. At first, he wasn’t involved in hoops, but he was playing soccer and later switched to basketball in his teens. Ighodaro played college basketball in NAU and later went to play professionally in Belgium. That didn’t mean that academics took a backseat. Oh, no!

Osaro earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Northern Arizona University, followed by a doctorate in Political Science. Later, he became a leader in the community as the Vice President of Student Affairs at South Mountain Community College. Ighodaro Sr.’s path shows the power of persistence and the importance of carving your own way. He’s a perfect example of someone balancing education with passion. And he made sure to help his kids realize that.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Oso Ighodaro's success more about talent or the strong family values instilled in him?

Have an interesting take?

When Osaro started his family, he didn’t want his kids, including Oso, to get caught up in early specialization in sports. While many kids start training at a young age, he took the opposite approach. Instead of focusing on competitive basketball, he focused on skills. He wanted his kids to have a broad range of experiences. “There was a lot more focus on skill development. I think just that’s all (Osaro) knew, and so that’s what he did with the kids,” he once said.

Weekends were spent learning soccer, tennis, and basketball. But do you know what is interesting about it? It wasn’t just about winning or playing in tournaments—it was about understanding the fundamentals, being patient, and building a foundation.

However, it does look like this approach must’ve been a bit unconventional for the time. But honestly, it’s so smart. By not putting too much pressure on his kids, he gave them room to grow at their own pace. Instead of worrying about early burnout, he focused on making sure they enjoyed every sport, chose their sport, and developed their skills.

On the other hand, Dawn, Oso’s mother, also played a key role in this journey.

Who is Oso Ighodaro’s mother?

Dawn, much like her husband, is a highly accomplished woman with degrees in Health and Physical Education. For over two decades, Dawn worked at the Summit School of Ahwatukee in various roles before transitioning to work with nonprofits. Currently, she’s involved in three different roles: Development Assistant at Espanola Humane, Podcast Coordinator at House of Shine, and Operations Consultant at Carlo Rockmore LLC. She’s an example of someone who has managed to balance family, career, and personal growth.

Through it all, Dawn and Osaro maintained a relatively private life. Even today, when he makes headlines with the Phoenix Suns, they still shy away from unnecessary media attention, keeping them focused on their education and growth.

When we look at Oso’s story, it’s clear that the foundation for his success wasn’t built on basketball skills alone. It’s a combination of strong family values, commitment to education, and dedication to hard work. So, now that we have seen his family and their roots, let’s get into knowing about his religion.
