Revolutionary Guard Stephen Curry has beaten the odds consistently. When he was about to finish high school, big college programs did not recruit him. He settled for Davidson and took them to unprecedented heights. His 2008 Tourney run where he dusted off top teams in the college scene remains etched deep in NCAA mythology. He broke the record for three-pointers made in a season for NCAA in just his sophomore year.

All of his emanated from a boy who is just six feet two inches tall and whose size led to many programs and organizations sidelining him. Now that he has scaled brilliant heights, he and his mother have traversed various journeys together.

When he was ringing it up for Davidson and helped the program erase a 17-point deficit against Georgetown, Sonya Curry knew her son was special. She was mesmerized by how he was thriving at his size and how he was silencing those who overlooked him. As per Sports Illustrated, during the run, she wondered, “We’d heard so much about how he needed to be bigger. But then he made those shots and looked at me, and I thought, what in the world is going on?”

She was right in the middle when the elite performer was choosing which college program he’d play for. During his groundbreaking documentary ‘Stephen Curry: Underrated” released by Apple TV+, he discussed the events that surrounded his decision to join Davidson and how people around him responded.

The documentary also features Davidson Wildcats’ head coach and program organizers who helped recruit Curry. Recalling the day of Steph’s decision, then Wildcats’ head coach Bob McKillop revealed his thoughts about when the Guard declared, “I have made my decision. I want to be a Wildcat”.

He recalls, “There was a shot of adrenaline. There was the sense that we just got a steal. No one knows how good this guy is gonna be. He is a perfect fit for what we do.”

Amidst this decision, the head coach and other people part of the staff were dancing with joy. Like Mama Curry, head coach McKillop also viewed Curry as special. Despite not going to a big program like Duke, the family celebrated the Wildcats’ choice with full joy.

Stephen Curry lays out intriguing details about his decision

Naturally, this was a momentous decision by the electric shooter. He dived into the decision and revealed, “So, before coach left, my mom thanked him for the opportunity. The last thing she said was “don’t worry coach, we’ll fatten him up for you”. The Coach turned around and looked at us and said – don’t worry about that, we’ll take him just as he is.” This gesture gave Curry what he tabs “confidence in terms of his appreciation for what I bring to the table. I’m different, but I have something to offer”.

He talks about how his schoolmates and friends responded to his decision. When he told them he was going to Davidson after two days of the exchange with Davidson’s coach, they “didn’t know where it was”. Therefore, the Golden State Warriors Guard couldn’t find friends who could “be on his level emotionally to celebrate the moment”.

The Guard was 172 lbs back then and is 190 lbs now. In the NBA, he is even more of an undersized and underweight player. However, he has used this to his advantage by building an uphill game and has earned a lot of laurels. Sonya didn’t need to “fatten him up”.
