The Golden State Warriors under Steve Kerr have been truly sensational. The franchise has won 4 championships since 2015and Stephen Curry has won 2 MVP trophies. Among the many changes made during the Kerr and Curry era, one major decision from 2016 still stands out in the hoops community. After going 73-9 and shattering the Bulls’ historic regular season record, the Warriors blew a 3-1 lead to LeBron and the Cavs in the 2015-16 NBA finals. This led to a major decision made on the 4th of July, 2016.
And over the holiday, fans reminisced on the move and engaged in a brutal battle with a 2x NBA Champion. Notably, many fans consider it the weakest move in NBA history. Have you caught on yet?

The Warriors emerged as an unstoppable force between the 2015-2019 period, as they reached 5 NBA Finals in a row. Apart from the star trio comprising Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, the Dubs had various supporting stars during their run. Andre Iguodala, Harrison Barnes, and Shaun Livingston all helped the Warriors clinch 73 wins during the 2015-16 season. However, Kevin Durant’s inclusion in the following year left an unpleasant taste in many mouths.
As America celebrated her independence in 2016, the NBA lost its parity.
Kevin Durant, the Slim Reaper, signed with Golden State after losing to them in the 2015-16 WCF. The team immediately went on to win two consecutive NBA titles in 2017 and 2018. Unfortunately, they fell short of a three-peat after losing KD to an injury in the 2019 Conference semifinals. Nonetheless, for a few years, every NBA fan knew what the outcome of the NBA season would be.

Eventually, Durant opted out of the Warriors camp in the next season because of a beef with Green. However, KD’s move is one of the most criticized decisions in NBA history. Fans often troll the 2x NBA Champion for not staying loyal to a franchise and hitching his legacy to the already successful Warriors’ dynasty.
As many fans point out, KD is yet to win his first championship outside the Dubs’ franchise.
Fans still roast Kevin Durant for the 7-year-old decision
The popular NBA content page, House of Highlights, shared a picture of KD and Steph with the caption, “I will always remember 4 July as the day KD signed with the Warriors.”
In response to that, fans swarmed the comments to roast the 6’10” forward. One user said, “Weakest move in history.”

Another fan recalled the experience of watching the Warriors dynasty take over the league.
“The NBA was purely unwatchable from 2016-2019. I love KD but he ruined the game those 3 seasons.”
Some users were more balanced in their approach, recognizing that the level of basketball was at a whole different level.
“As much as I hated the formation of this team, they was fun asf to watch”

But generally, the fan sentiment was not positive. This comment was particularly blunt.
“Kd softer than baby”
While some fans debated that the Dubs’ dynasty was bolstered by the Durant signing, the Warriors proved their mettle with a ring in 2022. Stephen Curry secured his own legacy by winning his first Finals MVP.
