Did Freddie Freeman's homer steal the spotlight from Anthony Davis' stellar performance?

The City of Angels was buzzing tonight. Well, part of it was because the Lakers made an insane comeback against the Suns to keep their winning streak alive. But there was a confusing moment in the third quarter when the fans inside the Crypto.com arena suddenly erupted while nothing highlight-worthy happened on the court. As it turns out, the Laker Nation was cheering for Freddie Freeman’s wild walk-off grand slam in the opening game of the World Series. Sure enough, Anthony Davis and JJ Redick were taken aback by the crowd’s reaction.

Yes, as the Dodgers trailed by a run, Freeman, who had been dealing with a sprained ankle the entire month, hit arguably the biggest shot of his career to seal the game. And when the highlight was shown on the big screen of the Lakers arena, the crowd went crazy. Addressing the reaction after the game, AD said, “That sh*t was crazy. I seen it. I was actually like checked out for a second and looked up and LeBron was just listening, like the way the ball sounded when he hit it, it was… yeah.”

Sure enough, that might have been one of the cleanest hits in MLB history. Moreover, it could not have come at a better time and a bigger stage for Freeman. Although Redick was confused at the crowd’s sudden cheers at first, he quickly decoded the situation, “With my deductive reasoning, I figured it was only one thing. That the Dodgers won.”

And that’s exactly what happened as Freeman’s walk-off led the home team to an amazing win over the Yankees. “It felt like nothing, just kind of floating.” Freeman said about his game-winning hit. Meanwhile, AD celebrated the LA team’s victory, “Go Dodgers. 1-0.”

Well, it was truly a cheer-worthy moment for the LA fans because Freeman’s hit was only the third World Series walk-off hit in franchise history. And he had been dreaming about it since he was a kid, “Those are the kind of things, when you’re 5 years old with your two older brothers and you’re playing whiffle ball in the backyard, those are the scenarios you dream about: two outs, bases loaded in a World Series game. For it to actually happen and get a home run and walk it off to give us a 1-0 lead, that’s as good as it gets right there.”

While everyone is busy celebrating the Dodgers’ victory, we cannot take anything away from the Lakers’ effort. Especially AD, who had his second straight 35-point game to keep his team undefeated. And he revealed exactly how they were able to come back from a 22-point deficit, “I think defensively we was able to come back in that second half and lock back in. Not giving them transition points, that’s how they got on to an early lead.” And hopefully, the two LA franchises will carry this momentum to the next game and keep the city buzzing.
