Before the trade deadline on February 8, the NBA teams remain active on the trade market. The Dallas Mavericks for one, has shown great interest in the Warriors‘ forward Andrew Wiggins. And as the deadline edges near, it looks like the possibility of Wiggins going to the Mavs is increasing, as the Mavs constantly search for a versatile forward. It appears they have locked their target on the Warriors’ 28-year-old forward.

Wiggins had signed a $109 million four-year contract extension with the Warriors in October 2022. Currently, he has been struggling to make an impact this season, as we are seeing career-low averages in points (11.9), assists (1.5), and three-point percentage (29.6). Moreover, his minutes have drastically decreased, with an all-time low average of 26.3 minutes per game. Considering this level of underperformance, the Warriors might also be interested in trading Wiggins.

After being traded to the Warriors in 2020, Wiggins played a major role in bringing the team their Championship in 2022. However, the decline in his performance this season is concerning for the Dub Nation. This also means that his value has seen a drop.

As per NBA insider Marc J. Spears, “Wiggins, I was told by a GM, there’s not a value for Wiggins right now. Although you could package him and [Jonathan Kuminga] together, you could package Kuminga and [Chris Paul] to make it happen, but the Warriors desperately need to make a trade.”

Moreover, it appears that the Warriors might be open to trading their forward, especially when taking into consideration his inability to flourish with young star Jonathan Kuminga. The team also has a guaranteed $24.3 million to be paid to Wiggins this season so that puts them in a sticky situation; the Warriors cannot afford to play him because of his consistent underperformance, yet they also cannot bench a player who is owed such a high amount of money this season.

There are two things at play here. The Dub Nation’s issue is that the proposed price for Wiggins at this point may be higher than the expense of keeping him around. If that’s the case, they could be better off benching him until they work things out this summer. However, if they can drop Wiggins at a reasonable price, there is no reason for them to not follow that route.

As for the Mavericks, they are seriously pursuing the Raptors’ forward Pascal Siakam; but considering that the Pacers and Raptors have engaged in serious communication about Siakam, the Mavs will divert their attention toward Wiggins. Now, it’ll all come down to if the Warriors can afford to let him go.
