The Klay Thompson saga has been in talks for about a month, with rumors suggesting Klay’s next destination. Thompson entered the free agency hoping to land a three-year deal, as he received interest from teams like the Magic and the Lakers. Not only that but as the Warriors were recently planning to replace him with Paul George, their dreams ended after PG announced his free agency. The situation didn’t seem to have progressed until recent news.
As per Woj, the Warriors will not re-sign Klay and are preparing to move forward without him. However, the Dubs will look for a sign and trade for him, ensuring his market value is respected. KT signed a five-year $189 million contract back in 2019, but at this point, he can expect to land a similar deal with half the bag. In other terms, Thompson can expect to earn a little over $20 million a year in his upcoming deal. For context, KT is looking for a three-year guaranteed contract.

Just recently, LeBron James announced that he will reject his $51.4 million player option this offseason. The reason behind the same is possibly the King looking for a pay cut to introduce new assets. And that is where Klay Thompson comes in. While the Mavericks have also been a team to monitor for Klay, he might be more inclined toward the Lakers, following his father’s footsteps. This year, the Lakers struggled in the postseason, and the lacking aspects were visible.
The franchise lacks a reliable shooter who they count on. While Reaves and Russ have been their primary snipers, they do need a more experienced candidate for the role. Thompson could be a great addition to LA, not only because of his talents but also because of the man who will respect them. JJ Redick, the new head coach was a shooting guard himself. His ability to recognize individual talent is what impressed Pelinka in the first place. Redick can direct Klay’s role on the team and construct a solid starting lineup. Although all seems merry if Thompson were to join James and company, some destinations may lure him even more.
Will Klay Thompson pick Doncic and company over the Lakers?
The Mavericks are also looking to land Klay and build an immersive roster. Joining Luka Doncic and Irving seems quite the deal but on the other hand, LA is also a strong destination to consider. Both have to potential to become top contenders in the West next season. And Klay would equally be a great addition to both of them. Though considering the amount of load Luka and Irving are used to, Thompson will have a more crucial responsibility in LA.
Playing alongside James and AD, the Lakers will become a concerning threat in the West. They have a complete forward who is a wall on the defensive end, along with the all-time scoring leader. This will be paired with Thompson’s addition, solidifying their offensive end. It will be interesting to see whether the Lakers pursue to work on trading for Klay. D’Angelo Russell recently decided to stay with the Lakers, as the front office can use him in a trade involving Klay.
