Warriors honor Jim Barnett’s legacy

In honor of Jim Barnett’s legendary 37-year career with the Golden State Warriors broadcast team, the franchise has officially designated the media workroom at Chase Center as the ‘Jim Barnett Media Center’.

Before his prestigious broadcasting role, Barnett played 11 years as a player in the NBA; including 3 years with the Warriors. Throughout his broadcasting tenure, he played a crucial role in documenting numerous noteworthy moments for the Warriors— including four NBA titles.

Barnett’s NBA career

Barnett’s NBA journey began in 1996 with the Boston Celtics. He was selected as the eighth overall pick in the Draft. Entering the league as a junior, Jim amassed around 20 points per game, breaking his school record. Despite initial uncertainties about his NBA prospects, his exceptional quickness and inside scoring opened lanes for him.

Furthermore, what truly highlighted Jim’s capabilities was the East-West College All-Star game, where Jim faced off against Cazzie Russell and Dave Bing; top picks in that year’s draft.

Despite initial doubts, Jim’s confidence in a secured NBA journey solidified after his fifth year, playing for Portland. With continuous improvement each season, Barnett concluded the pivotal year with an average of nearly 18 points. During his time with the Warriors, one of his most remembered games came in the 1973 Conference Finals against the Bucks; scoring 26 points and handling the much-needed defensive anchor for the squad.

Over the course of his career, Barnett also played for teams like the San Diego Rockets, New Orleans Jazz, New York Knicks, and Philadelphia 76ers. Across 732 career games, Barnett averaged 11.7 points, 3.0 assists, and 3.1 rebounds.
