The Dallas Mavericks have started off the New Year in the worst possible fashion. They are now 3-7 in their last 10 games after suffering a 122-107 loss to the Boston Celtics. However, the loss wasn’t the worst thing that happened today as Maxi Kleber joined the list of injured Mavericks players. And head coach Jason Kidd was not happy about it, to say the least.

Coach Kidd looked quite defeated at the post-game press conference after the loss to the Celtics. However, it’s probably not the loss that was responsible for his demeanor. Well, it partly was, but it only added to Kidd’s main concern.

This concern is the fact that the Mavs are out of rotation options when it comes to their big men. And Kidd did not mince his words when a reporter asked whether the Mavs had reached “critical mass” after the injury to Maxi Kleber.

“Yeah, it’s a hole. It’s tough. I’ve never seen anything like it. And it’s not gonna be any better. So, we’ll see,” said Kidd in response to the journalist’s question. Quite a bleak response from the man at the Mavericks’ helm. But it is an understandable one given where the injury to Kleber leaves the Mavs.

After all, it’s not like the Mavericks are doing good in other positions injury-wise. One of their most important players, Luka Doncic, is also out. And there are no official updates on his return, though reports suggest he will be back soon. Moreover, forward Naji also missed the Celtics game with an illness. And this injury to Maxi Kleber does not bode well for them, so let’s see what exactly happened to his foot.

What’s your perspective on:

Can the Mavericks survive this injury crisis, or is their season already doomed?

This comes only a few days after his teammate, Dereck Lively II, was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his foot. The Mavs said that he will be re-evaluated later this week. ESPN reports that Kleber may be gone for quite a while because of this injury.

The Mavericks were already short on options at center with injuries to Dereck Lively II and Dwight Powell. Lively suffered a stress fracture as well, and if you watched the Celtics game you probably spotted him donning a walking boot. Whereas, Powell has missed the last 4 games for the Mavs because of a strained hip.

But now, after the injury to Kleber, they are left with virtually zero options as far as rotation goes. And no one knows it better than head coach, Jason Kidd.

All in all, it’s not hard to see why Coach Kidd looked so dejected at the post-game presser. However, the Mavs will need to put their worries aside and focus on their next challenge as they take on the Washington Wizards on January 27.
