At 7'4", can Victor Wembanyama dominate the NBA like Shaq did in his prime?

As Team USA is set to face its most despicable opponent in the Paris Olympics Finals, they’ll be prepared to face the young prospect Victor Wembanyama in Blues. With his 11 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks, the 20-year-old’s game echoed that the Les Blues are there to win. In the words of Wemby, it’s a “chance to write history even more.” France has a chance to redeem themselves for their FIBA medal-less run last year, along with balancing the tally with Team USA for the Tokyo Olympics basketball gold medal.

However, they won’t be able to dictate their plans without their NBA Rookie of the Year, Victor Wembanyama. Wemby’s most prestigious advantage on the court is the physical stature and wingspan that he carries. They are the fundamental blocks of his outstanding basketball prowess. As Team USA will clash against the young giant on Saturday at noon [ET], keep reading to know about the physical traits of Wembanyama that are about to pose threats with their humongous reach.

Victor Wembanyama: Height, Weight and Wingspan

The fundamental rule of basketball is the height that carries a player to the basket and Victor Wembanyama has quite much of that. He boasts a long 7’4″ stature as per the official info on the San Antonio Spurs’ website. However, as usual, there is some discrepancy in that since his exact height listed on NBA data is 7’3.5″. His long stature will come in handy to trouble the Team USA offense to score the basket.

Also, it is not just his stature; his wingspan is about 8 feet as per the ESPN sources. However, it is yet to be officially available on the NBA or Spurs website. If the reports are true, Victor Wembanyama might be the third player with the longest wingspan in NBA history. Though the Spus’ rookie will still be behind the wingspan of Manute Bol [8’6″] and Tacko Fall [8’2″].

Often, players of long statures usually carry less weight and muscles, which affects their mobility. However, with training, those muscles turn into assets. For now, Wembanyama is oblivious to that privilege because, per the data on the Spurs‘ official page, Wemby weighs 95kg [210lbs] on the weight scale. It is quite scarce considering the pre-Wemby draft pick in the NBA, Boban Marjanovic, who weighs 132 Kg [291lbs].

Well, since the last season is over and new rookies are inducted into the NBA through the 2024 draft class, is Victor Wembanyama still the tallest player in the league?

Have an interesting take?

Is Victor Wembanyama the tallest active NBA player?

Victor Wembanyama is the tallest player in the NBA with his 7’4″ height, but he shares the title with Boban Marjanovic of the Houston Rockets. Surprisingly, the Spurs picked up Boban from the 2015 draft class. However, he did not prove to be as productive as they expected. That’s why the Serbian is currently active with the Houston Rockets, averaging 3.2 points and 2.3 rebounds last season.

Nevertheless, another prospect has joined the tallest player class with Wembanyama and Marjanovic this year. He is the Memphis Grizzlies’ ninth pick from the 2024 draft class, Zach Edey. The Canadian basketball player hails the same stature of 7’4″ but carries more muscle than even Boban, as his weight is 300 pounds. So, along with the reach, he’s also got the potential to block screens and get past them.

As the years pass, more and more taller rookies might appear in the league. However, the grace with which Victor Wembanyama blesses the game despite his skinny stature is impeccable. It will be worth watching how Dream Team 2.0 will get past his defensive trouble with their charged offense on Saturday.
