Is Victor Wembanyama being unfairly targeted, or does he need to toughen up for the NBA?

As Victor Wembanyama and Nikola Jokic stood in a face-off, ready to clash for a pre-Olympics game between France and Serbia, the former was unable to effectively counter Joker’s high-powered offense. Even the Serbian star was unstoppable when Victor Wembanyama was guarding the Nuggets center during the pre-Olympic game. One of the snippets from the game that got the most attention from the NBA community was from the 2nd quarter, with just 33 seconds left until half-time.

While the San Antonio Spurs star and France’s icon was guarding the Joker, the Serbian star quickly pushed Wembanyama with his hand and then pulled a reverse layup at the last moment to score the basket. Witnessing such a sight during the game, one of the commentators could not stop themselves from saying, “Jokic just bullying Wembanyama reverses it up!” This is perhaps unsurprising given Jokic’s weight of 284 pounds compared to Wembanyama’s 210 pounds.

Although Wembanyama is one of the best rim protectors in the league, failure to defend Joker only brought him misery from the NBA fans. One of the users commented on X questioning Wemby’s defensive prowess in the league as he penned, “Where’s the Wemby DPOY crowd now???” Another user mocked Wemby over the weight difference thing as he commented on X, Getting the weight Room Wemby 😤😤😤” Replies like these continued to put Wemby down the ground, but a single game with 3x MVP accolade is not a light ball to stop.

Still, fans are fans, and they leave no chance to put someone flying high in the air directly to the ground with their remarks. The last game sneering from internet users was not enough for Wembanyama since his latest maneuver also attracted a lot of mockery from basketball fans.

Victor Wembanyama is once again the target of the ridicule squad on the internet!

On Saturday after the game, a clip of Victor Wembanyama went viral on the internet that was in the form of a YouTube Short. The 20-year-old was pulling off some impressive juggling maneuvers as it seemed like the center had three arms. Nevertheless, he was changing the path of the balls before throwing them in the air, creating the illusion that he was shifting the balls’ position in the air. While it was quite impressive since the House of Highlights channel posted it with the caption, “What can’t Wemby do?”

What’s your perspective on:

Is Victor Wembanyama being unfairly targeted, or does he need to toughen up for the NBA?

Have an interesting take?

Though it was creativity at best, the fans did not focus on that and again targeted Wembanyama on a contrasting side, citing various things that Wemby can do. They included various insinuations, including height, professional failure, etc. However, one of the comments that stood out was where the fan targeted the skinny legs of the Spurs star as he commented, “Bro needs to hit a leg day.” Apparently, he was making fun of the rather thin legs of Wemby in comparison to any other NBA player.

Another comment again targeted the weight factor for Wemby as the YouTube user replied to Shorts’ question that Wemby can’t “Gain weight?” Since the NBA star has not grown that much, the weight factor is still lacking for him apart from his monstrous 7’4″ stature.

Another reaction to the Shorts answered the question in the caption and targeted the professional side of Wemby as he penned, “Win a championship for the spurs?”. Notably, the Spurs have not won an NBA Championship since 2014. It is worth noting that last season was Wemby’s rookie stint with the Spurs.

One of the users on YouTube went completely off-scale while answering the question in the Shorts’ caption, writing, “A back flip under the bed.” It was quite hilarious since such a feat is impossible for even a normal person, let alone a high-stature athlete like Wembanyama.

Another user mocked Wembanyama as well as Honda cars’ small size as he answered the caption with his unique comment that read, “Sit in a Honda.” Well, that was humourous logic and creativity from the ball fans for the Spurs star.

Nonetheless, all the mockery goes away once the Spurs rookie stops the shots from getting into the rim. As long as he keeps doing that, only accolades slide in through the comments as well as from the organizing institutions. In the next exhibition match between France and Canada on July 19, the same expectations can be put on Victor Wembanyama’s shoulders. Can he measure up to those? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
