Is Victor Wembanyama the next big thing in the NBA, or just another overhyped rookie?

“He’s going to be a real, real problem. He’s already a problem, but I think he’s going to be a real, real problem really soon”. To receive this praise from Rudy Gobert, another French NBA star, likely reassured Victor Wembanyama that he was on the right track. However, for several of his peers, he has already established himself as quite ‘troublesome.’ Although the San Antonio Spurs had the fifth-worst record during the recent series, Wemby broke over 12 prominent records during his rookie season, including being the youngest to achieve a triple-double with double-digit block, and without a turnover. Therefore, just like Gobert, one of the most prominent personalities in the sports and video gaming world is waiting to have the player become his ‘ultimate’ version.

Yesterday, the official Instagram account of BR (Bleacher Report) Gaming posted an interview conducted with Ronnie 2K. BR asked Ronnie2K to build the ‘ultimate’ NBA 2K player by combining the attributes and skills of any athlete of his choosing. For ball handling, he chose Kyrie Irving. When it came to size, the millionaire selected the 7’4″ Wembanyama.

Ronnie2K didn’t just praise Wembanyama’s height. “I gotta take Wemby in terms of size and being able to do everything that he can do. He is the ultimate video game character.” Additionally, the 41-year-old also chose Wemby when revealing whose ‘Interior Defense’ skills he would infuse in his dream player. The praise didn’t just stop there, as he concluded his ultimate 2K player pick by stating “I think like, in a couple of years, it’s gonna be all Wemby, all the time.”

Having served as the digital marketing director for 2K Games, and the ultimate face of the popular NBA 2K series since its beginning, Ronnie 2K has solid influence in the basketball world. By working on and releasing over 26 different editions of NBA 2K games, he has helped the brand generate over $7.5 million per year. This success has contributed to the market cap valuation of 2K Games’ parent company, Take-Two Interactive, reaching an impressive $25.69 billion.

Such is the power of the basketball video game series that Klay Thompson once started a beef with the video game mogul after his 3-point rating in NBA 2K 23 was reduced to 88, despite it being the second-highest. However, Wemby would have no complaints. After all, his rating in NBA 2K24 was 84, the highest ever for a rookie. The same has now been increased to 91, making him the 18th highest-rated amongst a field of 500+ other players.

“It’s the highest rating for a second-year player after the highest rating for a first-year player, but he has not disappointed at any point,” Ronnie 2K said when discussing Wembanyama’s rating. “Ever since that first Summer League game, he’s been absolutely dominant, so sky’s the limit. I mean, you saw him play internationally over the summer and he looked like he had taken another step, so he’s only going to get better with experience and time.”

It’s no easy task to go from a French Basketball league, bid adieu to your home country, and go all the way to the NBA at the age of 19. However, not only did Wemby handle the outer challenges, he also excelled beautifully in his chosen field, outperforming everyone in his draft class to earn the Rookie of the Year title, alongside being named to the All-NBA Defensive team. Now, going into his second season, the player has to live up to all the expectations not just being set by Ronnie 2K, but also by his former peers.

The following season will see many veterans returning, alongside introducing some new rookies and two-way contract-holding players to the field. However, For the first time since 2013, Patrick Beverley won’t be playing in the NBA. He recently signed with the Israel basketball league’s Hapoel Tel Aviv. The point guard would have loved to compete against Victor Wembanyama for at least one season. But now it’s up to others to defend him. Despite this, Beverley isn’t holding back in his praise of Wembanyama.

During a recent segment of his ‘Pat Bev Pod’, the point guard proceeded to name his Top 5 Center picks. He surprised everyone by naming Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, Ivica Zubac, Anthony Davis, and Bam Adebayo, but not Victor Wembanyama! However, Beverley had a good reason for omitting the French star, stating “He’s not a five. He’s everything. You can’t even put him in comparison with other people. … Just because you’re 7-foot-4 doesn’t make you a center”. To be a center, the former player believed that one had to simply set screen-and-rolls.

“It’s not fair for him to give him a position,” Beverley added. “He’s an alien, he’s positionless.”

When playing for a franchise like the San Antonio Spurs, which hasn’t even made the playoffs since 2019, one has to look to cover as many positions as one can. This versatility is why Ronnie 2K likes Victor Wembanyama. This is also what may get him a higher rating on his games.
