The curtains were finally raised on the most anticipated face-off of the season; the 2003 No.1 Draft pick and the 2023 No.1 Draft pick finally met on the court to battle it out. LeBron James vs Victor Wembanyama was one of the biggest treats for the fans, but the odds were against Wemby as the Spurs played their first game against the Lakers on Wednesday, resulting in a loss.

However, come Friday night, they secured a win. While all of this is exciting, Wemby’s reaction to meeting the King on the court for the first time is nothing short of interesting.

It is no secret that Wemby, like many other young players, had always adored and looked up to Bron. Then, fast forward to the present, and he was on the same court as King James himself. Wemby was asked after the game whether he was starstruck upon seeing Bron on the court. Very confidently, the 19-year-old prodigy replied, “Starstruck? I don’t know that word.”

Wemby admitted that he was indifferent about the situation, and while locked in on the game, he only saw Bron as another opponent and nothing else. “I would have thought I would have felt some type of way, but on the court, I was just trying to win, trying to defend, trying to make the right play. So, no, I didn’t have any feelings about him,” he said. The Spurs’ win against the Lakers puts an end to their losing streak and we can only hope that it only gets better from here on out.

The Spurs were in a deep slump, unable to find a rhythm amidst their wild 18-game-losing streak. This win was like rain in the desert for the suffering team and Wemby is very optimistic about the future. “We’re back now and I’m sure there are going to be many more in the future. I like that. The easy option would have been just to just give up, but nobody in that locker room has had that attitude,” he said.

However, the Spurs will have a lot of catching up to do, considering they have slid down to the 5th position in the Southwest Division. Their recent victory has boosted the much-needed morale of the teammates as they gear up for their run into the playoffs.
