San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama was likened to LeBron James even before he stepped foot on the NBA court. The 2023 NBA Draft first pick was touted as the greatest prospect since King James. This comparison has led many to wonder what a matchup between the two might look like. Tonight presents an opportunity for fans to witness exactly that. The Spurs will meet the Los Angeles Lakers for the first time this season.
The Spurs are currently struggling with one of the franchise’s worst losing records (3-19). They’ll enter the contest hoping for a win, but the Lakers will be a hard nut to crack. Will Wemby suit up tonight to help the Spurs break free from their 17-game losing spell?

Victor Wembanyama suffered an injury scare during the team’s matchup against the Houston Rockets. While trying to grab a loose ball, the Spurs’ center twisted his ankle to prevent stepping out of bounds. Though the ankle roll appeared scary, the rookie got up and picked up right where he left, as if nothing even happened. The injury also sparked concerns about his availability tonight against the Lakers. Fortunately for the Spurs, the rookie unicorn is off the injury report and is expected to play tonight.

Despite bagging the No. 1 pick, the Spurs are still rooted at the bottom, with one of the worst records in recent memory. The French phenom is averaging 18.8 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists, but the lack of a proper supporting cast has been the root of their concerns this season. Therefore, having their leading scorer in the lineup will play a huge role in their pursuit of a win against the IST Champions.
The Spurs are only monitoring one player on the injury report – backup guard Charles Bassey. Considering Charles’ limited role, his absence won’t weigh heavily on the team.
LeBron James and Victor Wembanyama’s face-off might stall
Tonight’s matchup is among the most anticipated ones this season, as it will pit two of the most hyped players in league history against one another. However, the fans may have to wait. The Lakers will play the second leg of a back-to-back, traveling from Dallas to San Antonio. Considering LeBron James has been constantly appearing on the injury reports since his calf injury on November 10, his availability is in question.

Although he is not mentioned on the injury report, James said his status for Wednesday’s matchup is questionable. With the load he has had to shoulder in the last couple of games due to the in-season tournament, the rest might be needed to ensure he doesn’t flare up his calf contusion.

Therefore, even though he is off the injury report for now, fans should watch out for any updates as tipoff approaches. But they shouldn’t be dismayed in case James decides to rest tonight since the Lakers play the Spurs back-to-back.
