The Golden State Warriors have some important decisions to make in the coming days. The most glaring of it all is the contract extension of Klay Thompson. The aging star is currently an unrestricted free agent. After serving eleven years with the Bay, his decline has created some reluctance to offer him an extension. The last report suggested there had been no concrete evidence of any talks between the parties.
So far, it appears to remain the same. Adrian Wojnarowski reported on the sharpshooter’s contract stalemate and said the Warriors are yet to even open communications with his team over a possible contract. Woj could foresee a scenario where the Warriors do provide Thompson with an extension but only if they can find a trade partner for him. It all depends on the decision of Paul George, who has until tonight to decide whether he opts into his $48.8 million player option with the Clippers.
The latest Klay Thompson update via @wojespn indicates he’s likely to leave the Warriors:

“I think the dominos will start to fall in free agency you know perhaps beginning with Paul George and then players like Klay Thompson follow suit. But I think his future in Golden State again very tenuous,” the renowned analyst claims.
Everything now hinges on Paul George’s final decision. If he does opt-in, it could be an indication of an imminent trade in the works. If that’s the case, the Warriors might be in the running, given their infatuation for the Clippers’ combo forward. Due to their unattractive draft capital, a three-team trade seems to be the most possible with the Clippers gaining young components from the Warriors and the team involved. Paul George will become part of the new Warriors core while Thompson looks to be heading out of the Bay after leaving an illuminating legacy behind.
Warriors will face trouble to sign Paul George
Paul George is one of the most coveted free agents in the market. Multiple teams have shown their interest in signing the veteran forward. The Warriors are aware of it too. They will be against the clock if they wish to add him to their Stephen Curry–Draymond Green core. If not, a team like the Denver Nuggets might pitch a revised offer to the Clippers and attain PG13’s services.

Previously, the 2022 NBA champions inquired about an asking price for George. According to Sam Amick, the LA franchise asked for Michael Porter Jr, Zeke Nnaji, and “significant” draft capital. The quotation was immediately shut off by the Nuggets who value their future draft assets. The outcome of their deal proves two things.
First, attaining Paul George is going to be expensive. The Warriors need to be willing to shed a part of their young group, which could include energetic forward Jonathan Kuminga. The second is that the Warriors can’t meet their goals of avoiding the tax if they choose to sign George and re-sign Thompson.
