After lingering for weeks, the Lauri Markkanen trade rumors got a bit of a boost when Utah Jazz insider Tony Jones claimed that the seven-footer would be re-signing with his current team after August 6. For a day, the Warriors fans lost hope as Joe Lacob and Co. were still on a quest to make the big move to replace their star boy, Klay Thompson. However, the latest revelation from Mike Miller, who also happens to be Grizzlies’ Ja Morant’s agent, has turned down Tony’s statement with an altered opinion.
Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller welcomed The Athletic insider Shams Charania, with some astonishing revelations. While Jazz insider Tony negated any trade possibilities for Markkanen, Mike contradicted the same, when he said, “I don’t think Golden State can be done. I think if you’re really serious about winning, they have to make a big move.” As Miller expressed his flow of thoughts, Shams barged in between to add, “They are trying to get Lauri Markkanen,” balancing the possibility.
However, Ja Morant’s agent quietly whispered to Shams just a moment later, “I think they’re going.” It was a shocker to The Athletic insider, as well, since he asked Mike Miller again to ensure, “You think they’re going?” to which Mike nodded in affirmation. As the chat proceeded, Charania asked him for safety if that was a piece of inside news. However, Mike immediately turned things around, further saying, “He can’t stop working,” addressing Shams Charania’s subtle observation on The OGs.

With what the agent displayed on the show, it seems that he spilled some beans, which he seemingly covered later, trying to laugh it off. However, The Athletic insider was keen enough to notice it. “If you’re going to try to do it one more time, you got to go all in. You just have to, so it’s going to be interesting. I don’t think they’re done,” Miller concluded while highlighting the importance of making the most of Steph’s last years as a player.
Golden State Warriors have company in their last-ditch attempts to get Lauri Markkanen
With a week left in the Lauri Markkanen’s re-negotiation deadline with Utah Jazz, apart from Golden State Warriors, the Sacramento Kings, and San Antonio Spurs are still on for the trade. Reportedly, they did ask Danny Ainge and Co. about the availability of the 27-year-old. However, any further progress for that deal is yet to go official. Also, Sac Town has not added any new block to their trade after their failure earlier this month to land the Jazz star.
As per Yahoo Sports, the Finnish player was on the brink of getting into a new team. However, it just didn’t happen, and later, the Spurs emerged as possible contenders for Markkanen’s ownership. But no one was able to match Danny Ainge’s hefty (Mikal Bridges-Knicks-like trade) expectations since he entered the market with a “10 percent” possibility of trading Markkanen from the team.

On top of that, the $30 million cap space that Jazz is preserving for Markkanen has given them some leverage in trade talks. Overall, their grip over Lauri Markkanen is quite tight, and teams must offer first-round draft picks + key youngsters to get the NBA-ready star from the Jazz.
The Utah side intends on re-signing Lauri and “the Jazz prioritize the young guys during the season, and they try to enter the Cooper Flagg sweepstakes,” Tony Jones had reported. Interestingly, even Kevin Durant has appreciated the youngster comparing his gameplay to that of a veteran at only 17! “He’s somebody that’s only going to get better with more experience,” KD assured. So, with all these future plans already seeming to be in place, what are your thoughts on this deal?
