Jaylen Brown snubbed from the Olympics—Is this a slap in the face for Celtics fans?

As Team USA looks forward to their friendly against Canada, there have been certain changes to the roster. Kevin Durant, who’s suffering a calf injury, will sit out of the upcoming game. And in bigger news, Kawhi Leonard will not participate in the Olympics! He withdrew after the Clippers and USA Basketball found it in the best interest that he spent the rest of the summer preparing for the next season. Regardless, Team USA quickly announced his replacement. And it’s still not Jaylen Brown!

Derrick White of the Celtics is set to join his teammate Jayson Tatum for the Olympics. But isn’t there a more talked-about player in Boston? Yes, there is- the reigning Finals MVP, Jaylen Brown. At first glance, there will be questions about why JB wasn’t picked as Leonard’s replacement. There is no denying that White deserves a shot in the Olympics.

But in Brown’s case, the shooting guard just won a Championship and was named Eastern Conference Finals MVP, and NBA Finals MVP. JB had the best postseason run and is coming off a dominant performance. But does Brown feel the same?

We’re not sure after his latest social media activity, however, he will definitely be happy for White. Minutes after they announced his teammate’s Olympic addition, Brown seems to have dropped a ‘triple doubt’ or a very confused indication. “🧐🧐🧐,” he posted.

Jaylen Brown’s name was notably among the pool of 28 players that had to be further filtered to make the final 12. Well, there is quite some potent star power in the USA roster. But when someone like Kawhi, who is a great shooter and defender, decides to give up his spot, Brown should be the best alternative! He’s an exceptional on-ball defender, a consistent shooter, and a hustler on both ends.

Jayson Tatum’s co-scoring Boston teammate would’ve had a perfect year had he been on the roster, as a Gold medal would’ve been a cherry on the top! It is sad to see Jaylen Brown sit this one out when he had the chance to play in the Olympics with no injury problems. As unfortunate as this situation might be, fans were not shy about expressing themselves.

Fans fail to make sense of Jaylen Brown missing out from the Olympics

The criteria to make the roster isn’t a fixed one. But the man in charge, former NBA player, Grant Hill, should’ve known better, that’s the common fan sentiment across the community. Jaylen Brown’s addition would have added an undeniable scoring factor. Yes, the squad is already full of scorers, but that isn’t the only aspect JB specializes in. Fans on X stated various reasons and expressed their strong opinions on the matter.

This fan believes, “Bro just carried his team to a championship and USA forgot about him smh 🤦🏿‍♂️”. Well, Tatum and Brown had an equally dominant postseason. To say that Brown carried the Celts wouldn’t be so appropriate. That’s because Team USA lost a premier defensive asset in Kawhi. And on paper, White’s record averaging one steal and 1.2 blocks per game as a guard, is significantly better than Jaylen’s stats. It’s common for a fan in sports to feel that the Board has forgotten/snubbed their favorite, don’t you think?

One of the fans hilariously mentioned JB’s weaker hand, writing, “BRO i rather have u with no left hand the White…. Idk what G Hill doing U or jimmy or kyrie should’ve gone.” There has been a narrative around Brown, that the 27-year-old doesn’t have a strong left hand. But the criticism didn’t stop there. He went on to list players he thought could’ve taken up the role!

On the other hand, another person questioned, “Bro how the Finals MVP ain’t on team USA? make it make sense.” Well, Jaylen Brown averaged 23.9 points per game in the playoffs alongside contributing little under 6 boards and over 3 assists every game. Those are certainly numbers one would reconsider looking at while being a selector. His 51.6 shooting through the postseason helped the C’s go all the way in the end and win their 18th title!

Another fan put a similar question in place, saying, “How is the best player on the best NBA team not on the Olympic team?”. Again, having a Finals MVP under his name, should Brown’s candidature have been considered over the 2x All-Defensive Second-Teamer?

Someone believed that “Jaylen Brown should feel disrespected, no doubt about it.” Was JB trying to show his disappointment through his recent tweet? We might never know. From another perspective, despite winning a Championship, was he not good enough that he remained unpicked while three of his Boston pals flew to Paris?

Seeing White in action as the champ takes on Canada in a friendly game will be interesting. Moreover, the game will include Steph, LeBron, and AD playing together. It will be a sight to see, knowing that these vets will probably be wearing the national team uniform for the last time.
