In professional basketball, we often consider the NBA championship the ultimate achievement. It’s a symbol of excellence that transcends borders. While it’s officially the National Basketball Association, its allure extends far beyond the US.
Track and field phenom Noah Lyles recently challenged this sentiment. This led to criticism from the likes of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and even rapper Drake. Now, it seems a 9x NBA champion settled the debate with just a one-word response.

Noah Lyles, celebrated for his remarkable achievements in track and field, had initially stirred the pot with his comments. After winning the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m relay competitions, Lyles used the platform to express his thoughts about the NBA Finals, also referred “world championship”. In a somewhat mocking tone, Lyles remarked, “You know, the thing that hurts me the most, and they have the world champion on their head. World Champion of what? The United States? Don’t get me wrong, I love the USA at times, but that ain’t the world. We are the world. We have every country out here fighting, thriving, putting on their flag to show that they are represented. There ain’t no flags in the NBA”.
3 days later, following Team USA’s victory against Montenegro in the FIBA World Cup, Steve Kerr was thrust into the debate during a post-game interview. When asked whether winning the NBA championship makes you a world champion, Kerr offered a one-worded response that left no room for ambiguity – “Both“.
Kerr’s answer resonated with the basketball community. It showcases his deep understanding of the sport’s global nature. It was a declaration that, while the NBA is a primarily American league, its impact reaches far beyond the nation’s borders.
Criticism from NBA stars and Drake
Kevin Durant, one of the NBA’s brightest stars and a two-time NBA champion, responded to Lyles’ observation with a hint of amusement. He says, “Somebody helps this brother.” It was a light-hearted jab, acknowledging the good-natured intent behind Lyles’ comments.

Devin Booker, another standout NBA player, conveyed his reaction through an emoji – a facepalm. It was a simple yet effective way to express his disbelief at Lyles’ statement.
Even Toronto Raptors superfan and rapper Drake couldn’t resist chiming in. Drake’s response had a touch of humor, ?He thought this speech was gonna be so hard in the mirror the night before ? now the whole league doesn?t rate u?.
