The Miami Heat were on the trade market for a point guard for quite a while. They tried to sign Damian Lillard in the offseason. But the Milwaukee Bucks pipped them toward Dame’s signature. However, four months later, the Heat finally have their point guard. Earlier today, Miami orchestrated a significant trade that saw them part ways with Kyle Lowry and a 2027 first-round draft pick in return for Charlotte Hornets’ Terry Rozier.

The 29-year-old guard provides a massive upgrade on Miami’s current options at the point guard position. However, Lowry was a beloved member of the locker room, and some of his teammates have reacted to his trade news. Miami’s center, Bam Adebayo, stated that Lowry was one of his favorite teammates. He was quoted by Tim Reynolds as saying, “Kyle’s been one of my favorite teammates, if not my favorite teammate. … A big brother.”

Meanwhile, an unfazed Tyler Herro welcomed the “energy boost” that Rozier’s arrival would provide. He said, “I think it’s time for an energy boost around here for sure. Terry’s a great player. And we appreciate Kyle and everything he’s done for us.”

While Kyle Lowry has witnessed a significant decline from his All-Star peak, he provided the Heat with playmaking and scoring off-the-bench. The soon-to-be 38-year-old guard also became one of the leaders of the locker room due to his years of playoff experience. Lowry recorded 8.2 points, 4 assists, and 3.5 rebounds in 28 minutes of playing time for the Heat this season. Now with the Hornets, Lowry’s future looks uncertain.

What does the future hold for Lowry?

The Hornets acquired Lowry and a 2027 first-round draft pick from Miami. However, Lowry isn’t on the timeline of a rebuilding Hornets’ team. While he could offer veteran leadership to Charlotte’s young roster, the Hornets’ management is actively seeking potential trade partners for both Lowry and Gordon Hayward. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, “The Hornets aren’t done dealing yet and plan to continue accumulating future assets ahead of the February 8th trade deadline.”
