Did the Dodgers' financial strategy with Ohtani's contract give them an unfair advantage over the Yankees?

LA is the City of Champions once again. With the Dodgers winning the first three games, everyone knew it was only a matter of time before they won the World Series. Yes, there was a minor hiccup in the last game as the Yankees sneaked their first win. However, the wait finally ended tonight as the LA based franchise closed out the series in five games. But before it all transpired, die hard Yankees fan Draymond Green tried his best to motivate his favorite team by reminding them of their historic legacy.

During a recent episode of The Draymond Green Show following the first three games, NBA legend Baron Davis taunted the former DPOY, “Right now, my boys the Dodgers up 3-0 in New York.” And Green instantly confessed, “I’m a Yankee fan. I am a Yankee fan.” Well, Dray has been a fan since he was a kid and has no plans to switch allegiance now. And with four games left in the series, he still had hopes of a potential comeback, “The series isn’t over yet. We’re not gonna do that.”

However, even though his team was down, he was not too upset with the outcome due to one reason. “My guy Peter Guber is the owner of the Dodgers. So, I’m not upset. I wanna see Peter do well.” Obviously, Guber is part owner of the Warriors and shares a great relationship with the veteran forward. As expected, Baron was agitated by Draymond’s mixed emotions and questioned his fandom, “We want you to hate us. That is the problem with the Yankees. Y’all are too nice.” And the forward gave a fitting reply, “We got 28 World Series wins bro. What more do you want? Y’all just made your 23rd appearance. We got 28 of them titles.”

Yes, the numbers were a bit flawed as the Yankees have won only 27 titles. But this might have been Draymond’s one final attempt at motivating the team. Unfortunately, it did not get the job done.

Draymond Green accused the Dodgers of ‘cheating’ before the World Series win over the Yankees

Well, responding to Green’s taunt about the number of titles, Baron Davis claimed, “We on the way though. Ohtani ten years.” Obviously, he was referring to Ohtani’s massive ten-year $700 million contract which has solidified his future with the Dodgers. And fans are confident that the Japanese superstar will lead his team to many more World Series appearances and wins like he did this year, getting them closer to the Yankees.

And Draymond responded with a massive accusation on the Dodgers, “It’s a shame they let y’all cheat like that.” Referring to Ohtani’s contract. While his new deal is the richest in sports history, it has a complex payment structure. As it turns out, he has deferred $680 million of his contract to be paid out over ten years in equal installments starting from 2034. And for the upcoming ten years, the Dodgers will only have to pay him $2 million annually, allowing them to add more stars in the coming years. Although it’s well within league rules, many opposing fans are not happy with this setting, including Draymond. And tonight’s game showed exactly why.

Have an interesting take?

Well, Green’s motivational words did work for one game as the Yankees saved themselves from an embarrassing sweep. However, the three-game deficit was too much to overcome and the Dodgers claimed their eighth World Series win tonight. And with Ohtani’s unique deal, they have a chance to continue this for several years and build a dynasty.
