Stephen Curry vs Sabrina Ionescu’s 3-Point Contest has already been compared to the historical ‘Battle of the Sexes’ tennis match that went down in 1973. It featured tennis legend Bobby Rigs and female tennis forerunner Billie Jean King in a showdown that is remembered today as the most-watched tennis game in history. Bobby, who was ranked No.1 three times and clinched six major titles, had already retired by then, and at the age of 55 challenged the then 29-year-old King to a match.

She beat him in all three rounds and won the match. This win was a huge milestone that led to the recognition and popularization of female tennis across the globe. Likewise, the NBA and WNBA fans are also hopeful that the Steph vs Sabrina showdown will help propel the WNBA to newer heights. So, when Steph was asked how he and Sabrina hope to have a similar impact through their match, he replied that although he is uncertain of the outcomes, both of them are grateful for the opportunity to promote the game of basketball to the whole world.

“I don’t know what gonna come out of it but me and Sabrina talked about it like how cool that opportunity is to do something that’s never been done before in our game. And for her to have a presence on this stage is gonna do a lot to inspire the next generation of young boys and girls that want to compete and see themselves in either one of us,” the 4X NBA Champion said.

Moreover, acknowledging the huge role that Sabrina is playing in all this, Steph added, “The roadmap that Sabrina has ahead of her as an ambassador for the game of basketball, not just women’s basketball, you know, how she handles herself and just the conversation around promoting the WNBA, you know, merging our two worlds, it’s gonna be fun.”

The goal is clear, have fun and do something special to encourage future generations to see the game of basketball as it is, regardless of gender.

Sabrina wants to shoot from the NBA 3-point line

It was ruled by officials that during the competition, Steph would shoot from the standard NBA 3-point line, while Sabrina would shoot from the WNBA line. However, she later came out and said that she wanted to shoot from the NBA line. She told the media that her decision reflected her desire to “continue to push boundaries and equal the playing field.”

Like a true champ, the sharpshooter went on to say that she would rather go down fighting for what she believes she is capable of, rather than playing on an unequal playing field. Regardless of the outcomes,  Sabrina has already emerged as a hero, inspiring thousands of little girls and boys all over the world. So for her, the battle is already half won.
