Can Tyrese Haliburton lead the Pacers to a championship, or is he just a one-season wonder?

Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton signed a five-year contract extension. This would keep him at the franchise till the 2028-29 season. Haliburton’s extension was not surprising following a brilliant campaign, in which he led the Pacers to the Conference Finals. We will now understand how will this benefit him financially.

The extension will begin in the 2024-25 season, and under the terms of a max-rookie extension, Haliburton will earn 25% of the annual salary cap over the five seasons. However, he could increase that to 30% if he meets one of three criteria during the 2023-24 season: winning MVP, making the All-Star Team, or earning Defensive Player of the Year honors. The extension not only rewards his outstanding performance but also offers significant financial incentives if he continues to excel.

Haliburton checked the box by making it into the NBA All-Star third team. This means he will earn 30% of the annual salary cap as opposed to the 25% earlier. “Obviously, we know the financial benefit for me,” he said, indicating that he knew about what he’s going to gain. According to reports the star is set to earn a huge sum of $ 244.6 million over the five years. He will make around $42.1 million for the 2024-25 season.

After his contract expires in 2029, he will become a Unrestricted Free Agent. The Pacers have put in huge trust in their star performer and will do everything to build a good team around him. He has proved his worth earning this extension and has become the star of the show at Indiana. Let’s find out how he made it to the All-Star team.

How did Haliburton make it to the All-Star team?

We’ve talked about how making it to the All-Star has affected Tyrese Haliburton’s contract. But, let’s see how the Pacers’ star made it into the All-Star team. The point guard was exceptional in the regular season, averaging 20.1 points per game, and led the NBA with 10.9 assists per game.

This led him to be named in the All-Star third team with 75 votes at the 14th position. Well, his performances were good enough for him to start in the All-Star weekend. This also made him only the sixth player in the Indiana Pacers history to feature in the All-Star. Haliburton along with Myles Turner and Bennedict Mathurin won the Rising Stars competition, competed in the 3-Point Contest, and nearly won All-Star Game MVP honors, making 10 3-pointers in the East’s lopsided victory.

After making it into back-to-back All-Star teams Haliburton’s expectations for this will be higher than the previous year. As he told the press during an interview “Yeah I mean, this is the best season of my life you know no question, up until this point though“. It shows that he is not done yet and doesn’t want to get complacent. He added “I plan to have a lot more success in this uniform” showing his commitment to the Franchise and laying out what he wants in the future.

He also made it clear that last season’s success which was reaching the Conference Finals and him making the All-Star shouldn’t be a one-time thing. In his words “I don’t want this to just be a feel-good story, we don’t want this to be a one-year thing, we want this to be the standard and we got to prove that we can uphold that.” It indicates how the Pacers are viewing their success from last season and looking to build on that. Haliburton looks locked in to not only make the All-Star once again but to also lead his team to another deep Playoff run as well.
