Russell Westbrook is undisputedly one of the best players in NBA. He has cemented his spot in the starting line-up as the most reliable scorers for his teams. Since his move to the LA Clippers early this year, the 35-year-old  has teamed-up with superstars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George to create their own version of superteam. But with the addition of James Harden this month, things have been confusing for the Clippers as they try to find the harmony and consistency.

Four All-Stars starting could be heavy and so Westbrook has been a part of rotation for the past few games. And head coach Ty Lue is of the opinion that it is best for the team.

Russell will help lead the second unit

In their match-up against the San Antonio Spurs last night, the Clippers posted 124 against the Spurs’ 99 points. Speaking at a post-game interview, the head coach shared they were looking to create more post-up opportunities for Westbrook as part of the second unit. Lue explained, “Playing with him out of the post. Capitalizing him on the block. Being able to post and get guys in spots and play from there. This is an adjustment period for him.”

Coach Lue also added that this move may be new for him since he has always started with George and Leonard. But the guard has come along great in adapting to his new role. He also pointed out that Russell in the second unit means that he will be able to control the ball better and create more scoring opportunities for his teammates while stationed at the post.

Russell Westbrook and Co’s progress so far

The Clippers’ season looked hopeless after Harden joined them this November. They went from 3-2 to 3-7 over the course of five games. But now, it looks like they have finally concocted their winning mix. With the three stars leading from the front, Russell is able to take care of the second half and give the Clippers their much-needed consistency. He has been averaging 13.5 points with 6.6 rebounds and 5.4 assists.
