Does honoring legends like Bob Cousy and Bill Russell overshadow the current Celtics' achievements?

The Boston Celtics only have a few hours to savor their victory for the last time. Within 30 minutes of receiving their rings, the first of the new regular season will start. Getting their rings in front of their arch rivals the New York Knicks will be an amazing feeling for sure. Championship rings will be the center of attention at the TD Garden today. These rings are a work of art, often being abundant with diamonds, crystals, and other rare gems. Companies often customize each ring for the player, while incorporating a few common elements.

With the C’s securing their 18th Championship, we expect Jason of Beverly Hills to create an exquisite ring. Known for working with clients like Drake and the Los Angeles Lakers, Jason of Beverly Hills customizes each ring for the players. The designs often feature nods to the team’s record and tributes to former players. “We’re approaching a point where we can’t get any bigger and designers now have to focus more on the innovation and design of the rings than ever before,” Jason Arasheben had revealed in a 2019 interview.

So how will the 2024 ring compare to the 2008 Celtics ring? For starters the 2008 ring was made by Balfour, a company that specializes in high school, college, military, and championship rings, as well as yearbooks, caps and gowns, and graduation announcements. A seasoned championship ring manufacturer. The 2008 ring contains nearly 9cts of gemstones, including a combination of 92 diamonds and emeralds.

The ring features a shamrock made from three custom-cut 8 mm heart-shaped emeralds and three custom-cut baguette emeralds on top. Surrounding the emerald shamrock are 64 pavé-set diamonds, while 20 princess-cut diamonds adorn the bezel, and a 0.10 ct diamond sits in the Larry O’Brien trophy on the shank. One shank bears the words “Banner 17,” celebrating the Celtics’ 17th championship win, while the other displays the word “Ubuntu” (an African philosophy meaning “I am, because we are”), the team’s mantra. The background of both shanks resembles the team’s iconic parquet floor. Inside each ring is Red Auerbach’s name, along with each player’s name, jersey number, and the Celtics’ 66-16 season record.

The 2024 ring is also expected to have references to the C’s record of the 2023-24 season. “You just have to start connecting the dots,” said Arasheben while speaking to the NYTimes.com in 2019 when he designed the Lakers’ ring. In January 2020, Kobe Bryant’s demise shocked the world. According to reports the Lakers’ 2020 ring had a detachable top when removed, featuring a Bryant statue. It also had ‘Black Mamba’ etched, a nickname for the Lakers’ star. Similarly, with the passing of Bill Russell in 2022, there are expectations of the ring paying homage to the legend, who has 11 rings with the C’s.

Other Boston Celtics’ legends to be honored too

Bob Cousy, who was part of the C’s maiden championship campaign in 1957, will be part of their latest record-setting 18th championship as well. As part of a heartfelt gesture the C’s will be honoring the former point guard and Hall of Famer will also receive the 2024 ring at TD Garden today.

Have an interesting take?

“I think it’s fantastic,” Cousy said when Grousbeck and Celtics vice president of media relations Jeff Twiss visited him with the 2008 and 2024 Larry O’Brien Trophies. “It’s completely unexpected.”

“You’ve been instrumental in all the championships,” Grousbeck told Cousy, according to Doyle on X.

Cousy, who turned 96 in August, shared with The Boston Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy in June that one of his last wishes was to witness the Celtics raising Banner 18. The Celtics fulfilled that dream by dominating the 2024 playoffs and defeating the Dallas Mavericks in five games during the NBA Finals to secure their 18th championship.

Now, Cousy will have the chance to see Banner 18 go up in the TD Garden rafters and enjoy a special moment he never experienced as a player. Cousy mentioned to Doyle that he only recalls receiving one ring, as the Celtics didn’t hand out trophies after their championships in the 1950s and 1960s.
