Are the Bulls making the right move by letting LaVine and Vucevic go for fresh talent?

The Chicago Bulls have got to win something. They are a storied franchise thanks to Michael Jordan and the team looks for another year of rebuild; for the umpteenth time, one may say. With the 2025 NBA Draft Class having some top players, the Bulls will be tempted to pick up some players. Currently, they have a #11 pick in the draft, which they probably don’t fancy themselves with. Getting into the Top 10 could be critical and two players prepare to leave the franchise.

Or we might say, the Chicago Bulls pulled the plug on Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic. The guard and center arrived at the Bulls in 2017 and 2021, respectively. Expected to lead the team to great things, the Bulls project looks to have faltered. They want to get in the fresh recruits from college to revamp the team.

Moreover, the team could be built around Lonzo Ball and Josh Giddey to make the Bulls great again. Well, according to mock drafts, the Bulls can get Nolan Traore, the sixth pick. The point guard from France looks exciting maintaining a unique skill set. He can pass the ball, shoot 3s, defend the perimeter well, and come with a high ceiling.

Therefore, the Bulls may need to finish in the current position or under the top 10. Some might say it is tanking, but most NBA teams trade off their valuable assets to rebuild rosters by getting exciting prospects from college. They nurture them and could free up some cap space for other talent to enter the stage. If the right wonderkid arrives, the franchises can complete the rebuilding process by getting a star to support the inexperience players and contend for a championship. Yet right now, the Bulls are 7-11, ranking 10th.

Yes, in all fairness, it’s not as bad as you think in terms of performance. Some teams are much worse than the Chicago Bulls.

But, in terms of getting the right prospects, the Bulls need to stay in the bottom 10. They have kept their top-10-protected pick by playing shoddy defense. Regarding defensive efficiency, the Bulls rank 28th with a rating of (118.2) as they leak baskets. Conversely, they have a strong aspect in their league-leading offensive pace, averaging 104.78 possessions per game, with the third-highest three-point attempts per game at 42.6.

It’s a tricky situation for the executive vice president of basketball operations, Arturas Karnisovas. With Vucevic gone, the Bulls would need a proper center to lead the team in the frontcourt. The plus point will be that his deal expires at the end of the 2025-26 season. With around $20 million on contract, there will be teams to pick him. But to get a trade for LaVine becomes complicated.

The player remains on a $43 million contract, which will rise to $48 million during the 2026-27 season. Trading him will be a strenuous battle, though. The player averages 22.7 points, which is not shoddy. When you look at it for a player earning 40-45 million, it’s really poor. Replacing LaVine becomes a complicated task now and hopefully, the Wizards or Nets can take him up during their rebuilding process.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, their chances of getting Cooper Flagg remain at 6.7%. Meanwhile, they have a 29% chance of making the top four, which gives them hope. The situation remains interesting at the Chicago Bulls franchise.
