Are championship rings becoming more about showmanship than the actual sport of basketball?

The Boston Celtics will be looking to relive their championship night once more before going back to the grueling 82-game season on October 22.  And who else but a familiar foe in the Knicks to face off against in their season opener. The fact that Jalen Brunson & Co. will be witness to the Cs’ raising their championship banner and receiving their rings on opening night is no doubt going to fuel them to go at Boston aggressively.

But it still does not take away from the excitement of the ring unveiling ceremony. After all, they are the works of the jewelry maestro, Jason of Beverly Hills. The same man who designed the priceless 2020 Lakers ring. He won’t disappoint! And with good reason, too.

“We’re approaching a point where we can’t get any bigger and designers now have to focus more on the innovation and design of the rings than ever before,” Jason Arasheben had revealed in a 2019 interview. A ring is supposed to be just that. So there is going to be a limit to how big the accessory can get. Hence, the next aspect that designers can naturally shift attention to would be the intricate designs – unique, timeless, and personalized in a way that allows each piece to stand out on its own.

Exploring the cost of the Boston Celtics championship ring and the features that make it priceless

Although Jason typically does not disclose the cost, these championship rings can cost anywhere between $30,000 to $150,000. Depending on the materials used and the finer details, the expense increases. With the Boston Celtics clinching their 18th title after 16 years, solidifying their position as the franchise with the most championships, it’s certain that the 2024 NBA ring will feature some special touches from Jason of Beverly Hills to make it truly memorable.

As mentioned above, these rings are custom made to suit each teams and players’ preferences. Take for instance, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s request for the Bucks’ 2021 ring. According to a June issue of New York Times, Milwaukee’s team president, Peter Feigin relayed the message from the ‘Greek Freak’ that he wanted a larger ring than his siblings. The Bucks’ ring in itself was absolutely mind-blowing, with features like a QR code that allows one to see the highlights of the championship run, the option to wear it as a pendant, the famous quote, “Bucks in 6,” by Brandon Jennings, and their slogan, ‘Fear the Deer’.

To our point, particulars like these – stats, slogans, famous phrases, team logo, players’ names, and whatever else the team wants or what Jason devises in that insanely creative mind of his, make the ring exceptionally valuable. Add the high-quality materials – gold, diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and other precious stones – they are designed to impress! And expensive.

Have an interesting take?

Well, we don’t have to wait too long for the unveiling ceremony now. But in the meantime, why don’t we take a quick look at a select few championship rings from the past?

Previous NBA rings that blew the minds of basketball fans worldwide

Perhaps the previously mentioned 2020 Lakers ring continue to be valued beyond words. The reportedly $20,000 ring has a detachable top. It opens to reveal a tribute to the franchise legend, Kobe Bryant, with a black snake on the side – another reference to his nickname, the ‘Black Mamba’. The ring had 804 stones and 17 purple amethysts on top of a 16.45-carat gold base! The 17 amethysts weren’t there just to look pleasing – they represent Los Angeles’ 17 titles.

What’s more? The team presented a ring to all 20 players, bringing the cost to a total of $400,000. The above-mentioned Bucks weren’t behind in the inclusion of stones and other high-end materials. The ring is encrusted with a total of 400 diamonds, 16-emerald gems on the left side representing the games won in the playoffs won that season. Another 16 diamonds commemorated their divisional titles. Again, it’s cost wasn’t publicly disclosed, but it was reported to be upwards of $30,000.

There’s no question that the Celtics ring is going to be extraordinary. And we have a perfectly good reason to say so. “Athletes are naturally competitive, but owners are also competitive. They want to outdo each previous ring, so the rings are getting bigger every year,” Jason Arasheben noted in that New York Times issue.
