The close bond between rap and basketball is nothing new. And with it came strong friendships between the rappers and the players, with many featuring in cameo roles in their albums. One such friendship is between the Canadian rap and hip-hop sensation Drake and Lakers superstar LeBron James. But another feature that basketball and rapper share is their beef with the top names in their respective fields.
As such, the major beef that has spanned over the years is between none other than Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Their most recent spat, however, involved another big name – J Cole. In a rather hilarious turn of events, LeBron ended up getting caught in the middle, as well. The King was seen rapping along to the Compton-born rapper’s fiery line from the latest hit of Metro Boomin and Future, Like That.
The verse by Kendrick was a direct diss towards J. Cole and Drake. Given Bron’s friendship with the latter, social media had taken it upon themselves to clamp their jaws on the juicy beef. But it seems like it wasn’t a big deal for James. And to prove that (probably?), in his latest tweet, the ‘Akron Hammer’ congratulated Drake on a successful tour.

That was enough for X users to jump ship. “Lebron tryna beat the “anti drizzy” allegations after the video of him rapping Kendrick verse went viral lol,” was the take of a TikTok content creator to James’ post.

Another user took time to post the video of James mouthing the verse along with a comment that showed his incredulousness. “Congratulating him after this is crazy,” they said.

This next user seemed to provide comfort for what may be the situation of LeBron now. But his preferred manner of offering solace seemed to be questionably hilarious. “Bron doing everything to get back in Drake’s good graces, it’s okay if he’s not your friend anymore bro,” he wrote, followed by a pair of laughing emojis.

While this is happening, there’s the other side of the coin. A group of people tried to make the best of the situation. For instance, take this guy, who wrote, “We got the goat siding w the goat”

And now for the final one. Identifying himself as Depressed Laker fan, a fan commented, “Beating the “i chose kendrick’s side” allegations i see,” followed by a Drake GIF.

Clearly, LeBron James isn’t getting off this easy. Every entity involved in this are greats in their field with a heavy fan following. The chances of any one side being happy are unlikely. But what caused the scuffle this time around?

Or in this case, the GOAT. We all know how Drake gave Kendrick Lamar a leg up back in 2012, which set the stage for his fame. An invitation to his Take Care album and an opening shot in Club Paradise Tour proved to be the “breakout season”. From then on, it was an uphill climb. And also the start of a diss battle.
The two have engaged in much back-and-forth on social media as well as throwing out feisty verses at each other. And fans have also gobbled them up like turkeys. Fast forward to now, and what was supposed to be a sweet acknowledgment turned out to be a full-fledged macho rap diss, not necessarily in that order. October 2023 saw the release of Drake’s 8th album, For All The Dogs, which also featured a collab with J. Cole, First Person Shooter.
A verse from Cole’s song went like this: “Love when they argue the hardest MC / Is it K. Dot [Kendrick]? Is it Aubrey [Drake]? Or me? / We the big three, like we started a league.” Unfortunately, Kendrick didn’t find it complimentary. And that’s when Like That was released last month. The line by Lamar was filled with a round of expletives, but what he meant was that there was no “big three, only big me.”

We can understand how something like that would appeal to King James. Especially when it is right before a matchup. Except for a ‘like’ to LeBron James enjoying the song, there hasn’t been any other reaction from Drake. What it could mean, we will leave that to you, readers.
