Stephen Curry's promise to underrated golfers—Is he the most inspiring athlete of our generation?

Stephen Curry once articulated his passion for golf perfectly by stating “It’s something about this game. I don’t know how to explain it, but it brings a lot out of you.” The NBA star’s dominating presence isn’t just on the hardwood as engaging in golf, which he has been doing since 10, has allowed him to excel well in another sport of his choosing. Since 2022, Curry has looked to spread the same love by allowing young underdogs to participate in his annual ‘Underrated Golf Curry Cup.’ With the third season of the tournament being held recently, he went out of his way to make a big ‘commitment’ while celebrating alongside the winners.

Taking to his official X account, the 36-year-old featured the highlights from the 2024 edition of the Curry Cup, placing special emphasis on the strokes made by champions Izzie Kelly and Jaden Soong. Watching from afar and even recording the shots on his phone’s camera, Curry took measure of the players’ skills. Upon receiving their respective trophies, the Warrior complimented the diversity, equality, and access that one could receive through this sport.

“I remind you that this is about you, this is about each one of you student-athletes, starting a journey, continuing the journey,” he said. “Understand that, whatever your future in golf is, we are there to support you every step of the way. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. I’m committed to this for life. I want to see more and more and more of you sitting in these seats right now.”

“It’s truly inspiring to see all your hard work throughout the season lead to this incredible achievement!” Steph captioned the post.

When it comes to the Gentleman’s Sport, there are three principals that the NBA’s All-Time Three Point Leader likes to follow: equity, access and opportunity. Therefore, Curry believes that “If you want more representation in the game, you need to provide access to proper resources. It’s been awesome to share that with these kids and hopefully give them some inspiration.”

Golf holds a much bigger value than a typical sport, and Stephen Curry recognizes that. The Underrated Curry Cup was created with the sole vision of creating pathways for student-athletes and make it easier for them to participate at the green pasture. This would allow the number of individuals who play golf to increase from several diverse communities.

Have an interesting take?

According to Stephen Curry himself, less than 2% of golfers are people of color, and he wishes to “improve that by providing a platform for equity, access and opportunity for boys and girls.”

His efforts certainly are noticeable by the golf community, as the hooper was named the 2023 recipient of the Ambassador of Golf Award. The recent Curry Cup tournament hosted 26 boys and girls, from which Izzie Kelly and Jaden Soong managed to emerge victorious.

The NBA legend’s record on the golf course itself is pretty awe-inspiring. Last year, in the American Century Championship, Stephen Curry went viral after making a jaw-dropping ‘hole-in-one’ shot, a rare feat that even most professional golfers find it hard to recreate. In the end, the NBA player even managed to head back home with the Championship Cup after making an 18-foot putt. With the success that he has achieved on the green pasture, it would make sense for Curry to provide others the chance to excel as well.

On top of that, it only adds to Curry’s credibility upon knowing that he not only uses golf to help diverse communities but also to raise money and help out one specific community.

Stephen Curry and Ayesha aimed to raise $2 million through Charity Golf: “No parent should have to feel like they can’t help their child”

Since 2019, Stephen Curry and his wife Ayesha have been using their ‘Eat. Learn. Play Foundation’ to raise money that would provide members of the Oakland community with nutritious meals and quality reading resources. Recently, the power couple set out on an ambitious goal to raise $50 million that would help over 10,000 elementary school students improve their reading skills. Through the fifth edition of their Annual Workday Charity Classic Golf Tournament, Steph and Ayesha aimed to make a significant dent.

“We’re parents ourselves. We have 4 little ones. No parent should have to feel like they can’t help their child with something as simple as reading,” Ayesha said in a statement. “So, for us to be able to combine all these amazing community partners and be able to help get these kids reading and excited about reading, I think it’s the best.”

Along with being present themselves, the Currys also made use of their star power for help. 2x Super Bowl Champion Peyton Manning, and soccer legend Brandi Chastain made themselves available to lend a helping hand. Workday, the sponsor of the event, took the responsibility of handling the costs, so all the amounts raised for charity would be used solely for that purpose, and not to cover any expenses of the tournament.

The first 3 editions of Charity Classic had reportedly raised almost $6 million! The event held last year used events like a 18-hole Shamble to a $1 Million Challenge to raise the required amount. Musician Kelley James was called in as the entertainment, while Warriors’ emcee Franco Finn hosted the live auction.
