During an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, NBA analyst Brian Windhorst sparked speculations when he said that a top player would find the San Antonio Spurs to be a desirable destination. Although they did not make the playoffs, the Spurs, with their #1 2023 draft pick, rookie Victor Wembanyama, will be looking to build a team around their newly acquired treasure.
While there have been murmurs about LeBron James wanting to pack his bags in LA, Windhorst had another pick in mind. The name to pop out of the bag? Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young. In Windhorst’s words, he suggests, “I predict that a star player is gonna look at what’s going on with the Spurs and say get me there.” He then elaborated his take by stating that this mystery player would not be #1 on their current team but someone in the middle of their career who realizes that they can’t win the title “all by themselves.”
The San Antonio Spurs might become an appealing option to players who are looking to build a legacy. Even for Wembanyama, the addition of a weighty name to the team could free the shackles. For this to happen, Windhorst has a clear answer in mind. “I don’t think it’s gonna be LeBron [James] but Trae Young is an interesting name.”

Even though the Spurs ranked second to last on the Western Conference leaderboard, Wembanyama has been creating some motion for his team. In his first year in the league, he has averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 29.7 minutes. He has a field goal percentage of 46.5, with an offense rate of 107.9 and a defense of 111.2.
Point Guard Trae Young, meanwhile, has been plying his trade in Atlanta ever since he got drafted in 2018 as the #5 overall pick. He averaged 16.5 points, 1.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists in 19.8 minutes this season. With the right team, Young could, perhaps, unlock his true potential, something that remains largely unfulfilled. And the Spurs present an appealing option.
Will Trae Young and the Spurs make a good match?

San Antonio is currently in need of a Point Guard, without a player to fill that position in, the team’s offense has taken a hit. With this move, however, some first-aid, if not a surgery could be carried out for the Spurs. Young’s passes are phenomenal and with Wembanyama on his side, the two would make a strong alliance. More so, with Young’s offense and Wembanyama’s defense, the Spurs can focus on building a more balanced roster.
Many are excited to see if Windhorst’s predictions take form and if Trae Young ends up alongside Victor Wembanyama. Whatever the result, as is often the case, these remarks have sparked curiosity about the possibility of an enticing coupling; something that could strengthen the legacies of both parties involved.
