The Atlanta Hawks have been trying to build a team around Trae Young since he arrived at the Hawks. Granted, Young is an intelligent team player, with great vision and his pick-and-roll is pretty advanced for his age. But he is only 25. What the Hawks would need is an experienced player among the relatively young core. For now, Atlanta relies heavily on Trae to take the team forward.

It could be the pressure that forced him to put on a poor performance in tonight’s game. They suffered at the hands of the dominant New York Knicks in a 120-126 loss. Even though many have put forward their doubts about Young’s capability, he took to Twitter in a confident response.

Trae Young seems to provide reassurance through his tweet

His Twitter post looks like it is an answer to the doubters out there. But on second thoughts, it could be him giving reassurance in a more roundabout kind of way. Whatever his intention, Trae isn’t one to stay quiet. Whether it be on his failure or win.

Unfortunately, it is doubtful if Trae Young’s confidence is enough to get the Atlanta Hawks on top. Taking a look at today’s performance, it is very hard to “trust” the young guard. All the Hawks fans can possibly give is to take his word at face value. His 27 missed shots, 11 turnovers and dispassionate defenses do not help his case at all.

A great example would be him “trying” to block RJ Barett’s shot.

This kind of half-hearted performance is not going to win over anyone, let alone a fan. Where Atlanta is trying to create a title-contender team in the coming seasons, Young seems to be making as little effort as possible to help out. If he is going to be the face of the franchise, Trae will need to take up his role seriously.

He needs to understand that simply taking as many shots as possible on the court is not all there is to a leader.

What Young and the management need to do if they want to build a team around the star guard

First and foremost, Trae’s offensive prowess is extraordinary. It is partly what caught the eye of many coaches and the management. But that alone is not enough to take a team forward. Especially when the said team is looking to create a successful team eventually taking into account each individual’s strengths and using it to maximize their winning percentage. So let’s take a closer look at what Trae can work on. Or what his coach can ask him to focus on.

A major concern when it comes to Young is his defensive limitations. He is small. There is no way around his diminutive frame. So, when he goes against larger guards, Trae will be at a disadvantage. Unless he works on his defensive skills or the team figures out a strategy to compensate, the Hawks are going to be open to attacks.

Another concern is his shot selection. Though he has the skills to make difficult shots, at a longer range, Young is at a severe disadvantage. But again, it doesn’t need to be, if he utilizes his teammates effectively. That’s the next worry. He loves to hog the ball. While the team is all for getting scores, they also need to decide whether that’s the kind of culture they want to instill.

So, there you go. Ultimately, it’s the management’s decision to keep or let go of Trae Young. While he brings a lot of energy and hustle to the table, whether he can step up to a position where fellow teammates can blindly trust him to lead the way is debatable. After all, they wouldn’t want to be the next “Bad Boy” Pistons in the league.
