The All-Star Weekend hasn’t been great for Victor Wembanayma. It all started in the lead-up to the announcement of the players for the all-star selection. Despite averaging Defensive Player of the Year numbers and leading the league in Blocks, Wemby wasn’t even in the reserves. The two events he was participating in didn’t go exactly how fans and media were hoping for. In the Rising Star tournament, the 7’4 French phenom lost to a team led by G-leaguer Mac McClung in the semi-finals.

Other than that, various events have Wembanyama “tired,” so he expressed the experience of the weekend highlighted by a clip posted on X. “This match does not damage my experience of the weekend. I’m trying to stay professional to the end, and do my job, but the truth is I can’t wait for this to be over,” said Wembanyama.

Despite being a member of a skilled roster mentored by the renowned Pau Gasol, Wembanyama’s squad experienced a disappointing setback, falling short with a surprising 41-36 defeat in the semi-finals of the NBA All-Star week’s ‘Rising Stars’ tournament. Despite Wembanyama’s remarkable display, victory eluded them. The tournament laid the groundwork for the eagerly awaited NBA All-Star game.

This is heartbreaking especially considering the monster regular season performances Wemby has been having lately.

In his two most recent games leading up to the weekend, “Wemby” accomplished a triple-double and a 26-point performance. Facing off against the Toronto Raptors on Monday, the 7-foot-4 rookie tallied 27 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and swatted away 10 shots, becoming the first rookie to achieve a triple-double with blocks since David Robinson in 1990. Despite his impressive individual performance, the San Antonio Spurs suffered a 116-93 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, with Wembanyama emerging as the Spurs’ top scorer with 26 points.

This marked his third consecutive game scoring at least 20 points, following a streak of four games with fewer than 20 points at the beginning of February. Wembanyama’s season averages stand at 20.5 points, 10 rebounds, a league-leading 3.2 blocks, and 3.2 assists, all achieved in under 29 minutes of play per game. Next season when the offense will flow through Wemby, will the Spurs be play off contenders again?
