Is Paul George the missing piece for the 76ers to finally clinch a championship?

While most people were probably busy enjoying their sleep, Insider Adrian Wojnarowski dropped a 3 AM bomb last night, revealing that Paul George had agreed to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers on a four-year $212 million max contract. Spending five seasons with the Clippers, PG initially wanted to stay on the West Coast and was looking to extend his contract with the team. So, what changed in the last few months that eventually led to him leaving LA?

Well, in retrospect, one will be able to observe PG’s gradual decline from being hopeful about staying with the Clippers to later avoiding questions about the extension. With his $48.8 million player option coming up, he was first asked in October 2023 about any talks with the front office regarding his future. “It’s active, but you know, both sides have to be on the same page,” he replied, unknowingly predicting what was to follow.

Then, in January, Kawhi Leonard secured his future by signing a three-year $152.4 million extension with the Clippers. And that very day, PG reacted to Kawhi’s extension and remained “very, very optimistic” that his turn would come soon, saying, “We secure and lock in Kawhi, definitely leaves the door open for myself.”

Exactly a month later, George reiterated “that’s the goal” to extend his contract and did not see himself leaving. However, it all changed in late April, when he seemed hesitant to talk about the extension for the first time. “There’s not where I am at mentally right now.” When the reporters tried to probe him more, a seemingly frustrated PG left the presser mid-way, sparking rumors about his eventual departure. Just a few days after this interview, PG’s performance also took a hit as he could only score seven points during a game while playing thirty minutes.

Did Kawhi Leonard’s contract play a part in Paul George leaving the Clippers?

With both Kawhi and PG joining the Clippers together five years ago, the front office probably believed that they would be on the same page to sign a similar extension this year. While it all went according to plan with Kawhi, PG was not too thrilled about not getting a four-year max contract. Reportedly, the LA side was only willing to offer him a three-year deal.

As PG mentioned in the initial days, both parties needed to be on the same page, this was one of the major reasons why he changed his mind. The Clippers were likely more hesitant in offering PG his desired deal because Kawhi was on board with the 3-year extension.

Meanwhile, Daryl Morey and the Sixers had been pursuing Paul George ever since the off-season began, and it was an open secret in the NBA community that Philly wanted the 9-time All-Star. Even Joel Embiid hinted at wanting PG as his teammate when they made an appearance together during a playoff coverage. “Hopefully this offseason, we find a way to get better, and you know add some pieces,” Embiid said while sneakily side-eyeing him.

So, it was the perfect situation for PG to leave, as he was getting his desired max contract while also staying on a title-contending team. But looking back on the timeline of his gradual heart change, there were always hints that he would leave if something didn’t suit him.
