The reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert is a crucial figure for the Timberwolves. As the center of the team, the French giant knows his game perfectly. However, speculations, rumors, and more have enveloped Gobert over time. Moreover, a significant setback for him was the finger injury that hindered his performance late in the Olympics. Recently, rumors suggested the Wolves might reconsider keeping the 32-year-old center due to his injury. But, there might be a ray of hope as some positive news has emerged from the team.
In addition to his NBA achievements, Gobert won a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and became France’s flagbearer despite injuries. So keeping this in mind, Timberwolves president Tim Connelly confirmed that the Timberwolves want to keep Rudy Gobert “for a long time,” securing a future for the 7’1, three-time NBA All-Star. Moreover, Rudy’s proven skills make him a strong choice for the team. Letting him go so quickly wouldn’t have been ideal for the Wolves.
Connelly affirmed: “Ideally, I think continuity is going to be one of the better strengths we have going into the season and we really like our core group. I think Rudy is good. He had a finger injury but I think he is good to go.” Referring to the 2024 NBA Preseason, the Timberwolves’ president is more than confident that Rudy Gobert will continue to add value to his team. The French center is also a former Utah Jazz player, where he had six playoff appearances. But, after joining the Timberwolves, Gobert enjoyed an extended postseason in the 2024 NBA playoffs. Last season, he averaged 13.6 points, 12.4 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, and 1.4 assists per game over 91 games. Pretty impressive!

“Michael Jordan was the only one that really had skill, you know what I mean?” This is just a part of the conversation Anthony Edwards had with the Wall Street Journal recently. And as expected, this statement, channeled a kind of outrage among the veterans of the sport. On many occasions, when Edwards paired with Rudy Gobert to create the ultimate lethal moves to pin down the rival teams, fans applauded. The sheer thrill of the game, which Edwards at times portrays is insane. However, such a strange comment came out of the blue.
First, the NBA legend Magic Johnson slammed Anthony for his statement. “I never respond to a guy that’s never won a championship,” retorted Johnson. He added, “There’s not nothing to really say. He didn’t win a college championship. I don’t even know if he won a high school championship.” Well, “ouch” is the only thing Edwards can say or feel after this. And just when we thought maybe, the backlash would stop, LA Clippers icon, Paul George entered the scene.

Talking on the Podcast P, the 9-time NBA All-Star said: “I thought it was kind of disrespectful to the game. I thought it was a very immature comment.” Paul also complimented Rudy Gobert’s teammate for his talent on the court. However, he added: “But just how much the game has grown and how far – you gotta pay dues to those dudes that did it before us.” Of course, Anthony Edwards should’ve credited the pioneers of the game and the league as well. But, when Edwards just picked Michael Jordan as the best one, the community was truly upset.
So, the scenes at the Minnesota Timberwolves are a cocktail of both the good and the worrisome. On one hand, Rudy Gobert is surely happy that the team is retaining him. But, the other side has Anthony Edwards, who’s finding himself in tumultuous fame. Will Edwards succeed in damage control? We’ll hopefully find out soon.
