What a cinematic season it’s been for the Minnesota Timberwolves so far. From Anthony Edwards‘ masterclass after masterclass to their 4th quarter turnaround against the Trail Blazers, the Wolves have really given the fans a run for their money. Up next though, they’re in the territory of the top dogs of the East- as they face off against the Cleveland Cavaliers, who’re looking to make it 7 wins from their last 8. Their last clash was a bitter one for the land of 10,000 lakes, as they lost to the Cavs a few weeks ago (124-117). It’ll be fun to see if they can exact revenge tonight.
While usually displaying peak levels of fitness, Edwards has been suffering from a sore right hip as of late. Coach Chris Finch did say it was a short-term concern- much to the relief of the Wolves fans. But this did cause him to miss the game vs the Trail Blazers. He’s been marked as questionable for the Cavs matchup, with a decision to be made on game day.
Speaking of Ant, he’s really outdone himself this season. The Minnesota SG has a combined 90 points in his last 2 appearances. At just 23, the way he’s going- averaging 27.2 points this season for the Wolves alone, seems like he was made for the big stages. But that’s not all he has in his bag; his value addition is his athleticism and speed- something that he capitalizes on during the break. If the Pack can rely on anyone to shift momentum, it’s him- ’cause as today’s generation would say, he’s him.

Anthony is really one that can do it all for the Timberwolves. The gaffer certainly rates him, saying “Anthony is our engine on both ends of the court. His explosive athleticism and relentless drive inspire everyone around him. We lean on him to light up the floor and keep our competitive spirit alive—he’s absolutely essential to our success.” But he’s not the only one in doubt for the Cavs clash.
Injury concerns keep piling up for the Timberwolves
Point guard Mike Conley was also ruled out for the Trail Blazers game alongside Edwards. Captain Clutch trumped up an impressive 16 points and 5 rebounds against the Houston Rockets on 9th Feb, but this came at a cost. He suffered a dislocated finger in the midst of the bout, which forced him to come off prematurely. He did finish the match though, proving his veteran experience and the value he brings to the Minnesota side. He’s still listed as questionable for the game against Cleveland.
The impact of PF Julius Randle has gone under the radar this season. While Ant was stealing the limelight from the rest of his squad (justifiably), Randle has been flying, averaging 19 points and 7.2 rebounds. But during their dub against Utah Jazz in January, he suffered a groin injury, which an MRI later revealed to be a right adductor strain. He’s set to miss the next 8 games through the All-Star break, which confirms his status against the Cavs as out.

NBA reporter Marc Stein also confirmed the toe injury to SG Donte DiVincenzo, as he’s out for the game as well. The American powerhouse suffered a partial tear of the plantar ligament in their loss against the Warriors and is to be re-evaluated in the next couple of weeks.

I think it’s safe to say that with Chris Finch at the wheel and Anthony Edwards as your spearhead, the Timberwolves believe that they can beat anyone this season. But there’s a reason the Cavaliers are at the top of the East this season, and winning against them will be a statement for the rest of the Association. Who do you think will come out on top at the Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse tonight?
