The highly anticipated Stephen Curry vs. Sabrina Ionescu 3-point contest is in the books. And it did not disappoint. Steph became the Ultimate shooting GOAT after beating Sabrina in a thrilling contest that went down to the wire. The first-of-its-kind contest was one of the most hyped events of the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend. The NBA even introduced a new Championship belt for the winner with a GOAT on each side, and “3-Point” written in bold on top, with “Champion” written at the bottom. In the middle of this, we have “Stephen vs Sabrina” written across the front of the belt, along with 4 stars on each side.

Sabrina came out to play and put up 26 points in her round despite shooting from the NBA 3-point range. However, her impressive performance was followed by Steph’s incredible 29-point show. Steph headed into the contest, aiming to win and break Sabrina’s 37-point record from last year’s WNBA 3-point contest. While Steph holds the record for the NBA’s 3-point contest with his 31-point performance in 2021, Sabrina shattered that record in 2023 among all contests. Although Steph won against Sabrina tonight, he failed to break Sabrina’s 37-point record.

Tonight was Sabrina’s first major event at the NBA All-Star Weekend. Meanwhile, Steph was familiar with the atmosphere as he had already won the NBA 3-point contest twice in his career, in 2015 and 2021. Although Sabrina had never participated in the NBA All-Star Weekend, she was no stranger to the big stage. She won the 3-point contest at the 2023 WNBA All-Star Weekend in her first attempt. Sabrina is a two-time WNBA All-Star and led the New York Liberty to the WNBA Finals last season. The 26-year-old has proven in a short time that she can handle the pressure and hold her own on the biggest stages. And she did the same tonight.

Sabrina Ionescu showed heart in her first NBA All-Star Weekend Appearance

Ionescu idolized Stephen Curry as a kid. Tonight, she got a chance to go head-to-head against her idol. Sabrina did not shy away from the challenge and showed immense heart. Sabrina won over the NBA World after she decided that she would shoot from the NBA 3-point range instead of the WNBA range. While the WNBA 3-point line is 20 feet and 6 inches from the basket, the NBA range is 23 feet and 9 inches. That means the WNBA star was already at a disadvantage heading into the contest, shooting from unfamiliar territory.

Despite the disadvantage, Sabrina held her own against the best shooter in NBA history. Even though Sabrina could not beat Steph, her 26-point performance was good enough to win the NBA 3-point contest tonight. Damian Lillard scored the same points as Sabrina and took home the trophy. Sabrina represented the entire WNBA community and Women’s basketball tonight. She would also be satisfied knowing the money collected in the event would be donated to charity. The Sabrina vs. Steph 3-point contest was one for the ages, and hopefully, Adam Silver can come up with more such exciting events in the future.
