After the Dallas Mavericks traded for Kyrie Irving at the trade deadline, they had high hopes of gatecrashing the NBA Finals. The main objective of the move was to add another star talent alongside Luka Doncic and to form a dynamic backcourt duo. Even though we got to see a lot of Luka Magic, the Mavs failed to even qualify for the playoffs. However, before the disappointing season, Kyrie Irving also faced suspension due to his off-court antics. In this wake, the Mavs player development coach shares an important lesson about not judging a book by its cover while issuing a stern warning to the NBA world.

During a recent appearance on the Knuckleheads Podcast, the Mavericks player development coach shared his views about Kyrie Irving. Shammgod highlighted that Kyrie is one of the most gifted and ‘special’ people, but he is often misunderstood. The 8-time NBA All-Star posted a link to an antisemitic film on Twitter, which attracted a lot of hate. However, Kyrie’s failure to apologize for his actions led to his suspension for a minimum of five games without pay. Following that, Nike also suspended its relationship with the basketball superstar.

Addressing the situation, Shammgod commented, “He’s just a great person, great player. He’s always trying to teach the young guys on the team. As a person, he’s special. That’s why when people say stuff I’m like ‘Bro, do you know him?‘”

Will Kyrie Irving make a comeback this season?

When asked about how it feels to have Kyrie on his team and to see him play, Shammgod heaped praise on the 31-year-old with a hilarious twist. “I’ve known his pops forever, so I knew Kai when he was young. It’s funny because when he first came, I was like, oh yeah, cool now we got the second-best dribbler in the NBA”. He humorously referred to Kyrie as the second-best dribbler, the first being him, obviously. The former Washington Wizards guard has a crossover named after him. He appeared in just 20 games during his stint with the Wizards in the 1997-98 NBA season, averaging 3.1 points, 0.4 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. Even though his dribbling skills were unmatched, Shammgod’s shooting efficiency was just 32.8% from the field.
