The 36-year-old Sun star tied Bird in this very aspect in an all-time WNBA list.

The New York Liberty took on the Connecticut Suns in a crucial matchup in the regular season. Standing 2nd and 3rd respectively, the Suns needed a win to inch closer to the second spot whereas the Liberty needed one to hold on to the second seed and push to overtake the Las Vegas Aces. Although the Sun eventually lost the game 90-95, their star swingman DeWanna Bonner made history.

DeWanna Bonner has led the Sun to the third seed this season, putting up extraordinary numbers yet again. The 36-year-old made her 5th All-Star appearance this season, averaging an impressive 17.8 PPG. However, her matchup against the Liberty recently witnessed her make history as she tied Sue Bird in the all-time scoring list. She reached this incredible feat with a pull-up jumper to cap off her 30-point night against the Liberty.

The legendary guard, Bird had amassed 6803 points before hanging up her boots in 2022. Bonner has now tied this record, surprisingly in 124 fewer appearances. Although Sue Bird was primarily a playmaking point guard, she had a terrific scoring ability which placed at 7th all-time in the scoring list. Bonner has now tied Bird with a shot to overtake her in her next matchup against the Los Angeles Sparks.

Bonner has now moved up to the 7th place in WNBA’s all-time scoring list with a shot to clinch the sixth spot in just two days. She can also move up to the top-5 if she manages to score just 9 points in her next outing. However, how did Bonner get to this stage of her career?

A look back at Bonner’s phenomenal career

DeWanna Bonner made her WNBA debut in 2009 for the Phoenix Mercury as the 5th overall pick in the WNBA Draft. Despite Bonner’s natural talent, she came off the bench for the first three years of her career. However, she only took this as an opportunity to make history, winning three consecutive Sixth Woman of the Year awards between 2009 and 2011.

She won the championship with the Mercury in her rookie year, following it up with another in 2014. She eventually got traded to the Connecticut Sun in 2019 after playing for the Mercury for 10 seasons. Throughout her WNBA stint, DB has been a bucket, averaging an impressive 14.9 PPG for her career. The 5-time All-Star has now etched her name in the all-time scoring list, needing only 9 points to move up to the 5th position on the list. She also holds the 10th spot in the all-time rebounding list.
