Monty Williams was one of many coaches to lose their job after a disappointing end to their championship aspirations. However, the former Coach of the Year bounced back quickly signing the biggest deal offered to an NBA coach.
Monty Williams went on to dethrone San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich by signing a six-year $78.5 million deal with the Detroit Pistons for the highest-paid coach in NBA history. But now, it looks like the veteran Spurs head coach has reclaimed his throne right back.

Monty Williams took over the helm for the Phoenix Suns as the team?s beach coach back in 2019. And though the Suns already had Devin Booker, Williams could be credited for making the Suns a contender once again after nearly a decade.
However, he was let go after the fourth year of his five-year deal as the head coach of the Phoenix Suns. Williams went on to sign the biggest deal offered to an NBA coach by the Pistons, a six-year $78.5 million deal.
But now, Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs has signed a five-year, $80 million deal, surpassing Monty Williams? $78.5 million deal with the Detroit Pistons.
This move seemed ambitious by the Spurs front office given Popovich?s history and his ability to develop players. And after drafting Victor Wembanyama, there wouldn?t be anyone better to coach the young French national.

Gregg Popovich took over the San Antonio Spurs coaching position in 1996. The team went on to draft Tim Duncan the following year. And after that, the Spurs rallied a 22-year-long playoff streak under Popovich?s helm.

One of the most reputable coaches in sports history, Popovich coached the likes of, and even Kawhi Leonard. So, there could not have been a person better tasked with molding the young 7?5 Wembanyama.
