The Phoenix Mercury played against the Connecticut Suns on August 10. While the Connecticut Suns is usually a dominant team, they couldn’t quite keep up with Mercury’s offensive prowess last game. Although Mercury did not have much impressive stats this season, Thursday night was different.
Phoenix Mercury made history with an incredible exhibition of their offensive skill. The Mercury broke a long-standing scoring record. This commendable achievement eclipsed the previous record, 44 points, which the Liberty established on July 23 of last year. And it was Brittney Griner?s 5?6 teammate that hit the insane buzzer-beater.

Moriah Jefferson’s amazing 37-foot buzzer-beater was the defining moment that cemented Mercury’s achievement in WNBA history. With her shot, the Mercury became the team with the most points scored in the first quarter of a game (44). This record-breaking accomplishment was the result of a team effort.
During the historic quarter, 9 different players scored points, with Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi standing out with nine points each. Astonishingly, 16 out of the Mercury’s 17 field goal attempts were successful, displaying the team’s shooting accuracy.
Furthermore, they excelled from beyond the arc, making 6 of 7 three-pointers with free-throwing skills, going 7 to 8.
The Mercury had outstanding ball movement, helping them succeed because 12 of their 16 baskets included assists.
It’s interesting to note that considering the Mercury’s position as the league’s lowest-scoring team?averaging just 78.0 points per game?their offensive surge took aback many people. The contrast between this season-long pattern and their success in the first quarter is quite shocking.
However, as with any exceptional scoring run, the Mercury’s offense gradually dipped to more modest levels in the following quarters.
The Phoenix Mercury stays afloat
The team’s performance took a sharp turn in the second quarter, scoring just seven points on 1-of-9 shooting. With a startling 11 errors made during the quarter, a considerable amount of turnovers contributed to the abrupt decline in performance. Notably, the Mercury presently tops the league in turnovers per game with an average of 15.7.
