Can Wembanyama's rising star power fill the void left by Popovich's absence on the Spurs' bench?

The San Antonio Spurs experienced one of their most ecstatic victories since berthing into the new age. Victor Wembanyama tallied his first 50-point game in their dramatic win against the Wizards. Yet, their franchise can’t devote their full attention to celebrating. A sense of worry remains looming for their head coach Gregg Popovich, who suffered a mild stroke a few weeks ago. Serving for over three decades, the concern for Pop goes far beyond just the Spurs contingent.

Even LeBron James couldn’t get to thinking about their clash against Wemby on Friday. The Lakers, as the defending champions of the NBA Cup will face the Spurs in their first game. However, even though a $514,970 reward is up for grabs, that hasn’t even crossed James’ mind yet. “To be honest, I haven’t even thought about it yet,” he told the media after the Lakers’ win over the Grizzlies.

James and Pop share a profound connection. The two battled several times in the NBA Finals, Popovich coached Team USA with him on the roster, and their longevity tales are becoming a legend in itself. In the past, the 39-year-old has termed the Spurs legend “the greatest coach of all time,”. And even though LeBron James is still his rival, he wishes to meet Gregg Popovich soon.

“For me personally, there’s much bigger news out of San Antonio and that’s my dear friend Coach Pop. I will be thinking heavily about him as I travel there tomorrow. Game on Friday and wishing him the best of health. Hopefully, I see him soon, doesn’t even have to be on the sidelines,” said James.

Both of these individuals have ruled their domains for over two decades. Popovich, the winningest coach in the history of the NBA helped shape the legacy of the Spurs dynasty. And without him, the franchise too feels empty.

It’s been 14 hours since Shams Charania gave an update on Gregg Popovich. But a lot has transpired since then. Notably, when appearing on NBA Countdown, the ESPN insider did have some positive news for the NBA community. “Gregg Popovich is home and is expected to make a full recovery from his mild stroke,” he announced.

The news caused ‘trauma’ around the Spurs organizations. As far as Coach Pop goes, he has become synonymous with the Spurs franchise. Having stuck as the coach for three decades, the entire organization acknowledges his radiating presence. The GM Brian Wright said, “When we walk into the building each and every day, we feel his presence. Not having him. We feel that void and we miss him,”.

But the yearning to coach another age of the Spurs team hasn’t left Pop. His philosophies remain to be an abundant part of the franchise.  With his thoughts in mind, Wemby and the San Antonio Spurs are on a two-game win streak. Currently sitting with a 6-6 record, it might have to do with some enlightening words from Pop himself.

Prior to tonight’s game, Charania revealed the encouraging message the seasoned coach left for Mitch Johnson and the team. “Don’t worry about me, focus on the task at hand here in San Antonio. That’s to win and try to compete and when I’m back, I will be back. Don’t worry about me,” were his words.

Wembanyama too spoke glitteringly about the teaching Popovich has transferred. The Spurs as a team intend to carry these lessons and make him proud. Do you think Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs can shock LeBron James’ Lakers on Friday? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
