Is Jason Kidd right to call out the Mavs' bench, or should he focus on starters?

Dallas Mavericks’ frustrating loss leaves Jason Kidd visibly fuming! It was that kind of day for the Texas side. After a slow start to the game riddled with a bunch of turnovers and sloppy plays, they turned up the heat at the late end. And, the Phoenix Suns held their nerve to steal a 113-114 win over Kyrie Irving & Co. As frustrating as it sounds, Coach Kidd didn’t try to hide his emotions at the post-game presser, as he went high on NSFW.

Speaking to the press, Jason Kidd lashed out at his roster for not pressing the early gas in tonight’s game. The coach said, “For whatever reason, we’re getting off to a slow start, it’s gotta be addressed. We have talked about it. There’s got to be action. There’s got to be some energy. Somebody’s gotta come with some f—ing energy.” The Texas side just couldn’t get in the groove for the entire first half. Like Kidd pointed out, Luka Doncic-led offense struggled to convert buckets and ended with a 10-point deficit.

Moreover, the team couldn’t fix it even after the first quarter break. Notably, the defenders from both sides should be equally praised. It takes an incredible combination of skill and athleticism to nail those contested jumpers, and only a handful of players, including Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Kyrie Irving, and Doncic, have what it takes. Nevertheless, the Mavs struggled with butterfingers in the first half, giving away 8 turnovers and heading to the locker room with a 13-point deficit.

The Suns cashed in on the turnovers, scoring 22 points in 15 turnovers. Moreover, the Suns received enough support from their bench, especially from Royce O’Neale as he dropped 18 points off the bench. In the absence of rookie sensation, Ryan Dunn, the Valley side’s bench, managed to stay afloat to support the side. Nevertheless, the Mavs’ bench also didn’t impress Coach Kidd.

Apart from Kyrie Irving & Co., Kidd lashed out at the Mavs’ bench as well

The profanity-laced post-game statement didn’t just criticize the team’s slow starts, but also the Mavs‘ silent bench. The Dallas side bench led by Spencer Dinwiddie only managed to score 7 points, whereas the Suns’ bench dropped a whopping 28 points! Speaking of it, Kidd said, “Our bench stinks right now…As deep as we are, we got to get someone to f—ing participate off the bench”

It’s quite unfair to blame the Mavs’ shorthanded bench. Tonight, they took the court without their sophomore center, Dereck Lively II, and starting power forward PJ Washington. So, naturally, the team found it difficult to keep their board ticking. If D-Live had come off the bench along with Naji Marshall, the story would’ve been different.

Nevertheless, the team also has positives to take away from this game. In the third quarter, the Mavs controlled the ball thoroughly without giving away a single turnover and cut the lead down to 4 points. Moreover, the inclusion of Klay Thompson has seamlessly worked for the side, as the offense flows organically between the shooting trio. Next up, they face the Denver Nuggets on Sunday before they head to San Francisco for the emotional reunion. Will the Mavs get back to their groove before that? Let us know in the comments.
