Coach Doc Rivers’ new technique proved to be a game-changer. By using video analysis and tactical modifications he managed to strengthen the Bucks’ defense. He noticed his players trying to defend the Denver Nuggets’ screens, allowing Jamal Murray to take advantage of those defensive errors.
So, Rivers addressed that problem by compiling video footage of defensive breakdowns and worked with his guards to enhance their position and awareness when defending screens. Not only that, he even introduced a football-inspired technique to Giannis Antetokounmpo due to which he was able to roam freely and achieved a double-double.

Doc Rivers’ defensive strategy allowed the 2x MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo to roam defensively, like a free safety in football. This strategy allows Antetokounmpo to use his length and quickness to disrupt passing lanes, challenge shots, and offer rim protection while limiting foul trouble. Rivers even spoke about it and said, “We want Giannis on someone on the other team that he can just roam. I guess, in football, like a free safety, he’d be an amazing free safety. I mean, he does a great job of roaming around and he got to one steal from the backside and he’s always at the rim.”
During last night’s game, the Bucks had Giannis Antetokounmpo ignore Aaron Gordon outside the lane and roam around the floor.
After the game, Doc Rivers explained that decision.

So Antetokounmpo adopted that position understanding its efficiency in disrupting opposing attacks, and contributed to numerous areas of the game. He grabbed 18 rebounds and scored 36 points on efficient shooting against the Nuggets, demonstrating the effectiveness of Rivers’ defensive strategy on both sides of the court.
Like that, under the guidance of Doc Rivers, the Bucks have improved their rebounding, which is an essential component of their defensive strategy. Now, the team’s ability to collect rebounds has resulted in fast-break opportunities, with Antetokounmpo frequently initiating the attack off the rebounds. So, overall, Rivers’ football-inspired defensive strategy has been a game-changer for the Bucks, giving them a flexible defensive system to back up their offensive firepower.
